Interesting. The ASun hasn't sponsored men's lacrosse, but will start next year. The members will be Detroit, Bellarmine, Air Force, Cleveland State, Robert Morris, and Utah. Oddly, Bellarmine is the only school in that group that is a full member of the ASun. Knowing nothing about why the University is making this choice, my initial response is that the MAAC makes more sense for us. Travel, though considerable, is probably less in the MAAC. Plus, the MAAC includes the kind of schools we want to pal around with. MAAC lacrosse teams: Canisius, St. Bonaventure, Siena, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Quinnipiac. All private, 5 Catholic; generally smaller, more selective academically. But the ASun teams that will play lacrosse include 2 Horizon rivals, CSU and RMU, and a private Catholic school in Bellarmine. Air Force and Utah are a bit odd, but they're first class institutions with name recognition. We're spared the likes of ASun members Kennesaw State, North Alabama, and North Florida, which fortunately don't play lacrosse. I wonder if it's not a predicate to the Horizon sponsoring men's lacrosse. Consider if the HL expands by adding Bellarmine--a logical expansion candidate--then you'd have 4 full HL members, and could try to bring Air Force and Utah along as auxiliary members for lacrosse. (The only other school west of the Mississippi in D-1 lacrosse is Denver, which a) is a national power, and b) plays lacrosse in the Big East.). There could also be several other possible candidates for a Horizon-sponsored lacrosse conference, including peeling St. Bonaventure away from the MAAC, Hobart (also in west upstate New York, and which is in the Northeast Conference in D-1 lacrosse and D-3 in everything else), or some other school adding the sport.

An article in US Lacrosse Magazine about the new home for Titan lacrosse: “ASUN Conference Adds Men's Lacrosse for 2022 Season” www.uslaxmagazine.com/college/men/asun-conference-adds-mens-lacrosse-for-2022-seasonThere is a partnership between the ASUN and Southern Conference, so I would expect a lot of the Titans’ non-conference games may come from the brother league. I believe they want to have two smaller leagues rather than one mega-conference to maximize the number of bids they will receive to the NCAA lacrosse tournament. I heard Eastern Michigan may soon move its men’s lacrosse program from club to varsity status and the ASUN is where they would affiliate their program.

The women's lacrosse team played in the ASun before moving to the MAC. Perhaps the experience was good enough to tip the scales, and I know they appreciated playing in the warmer climate when a lot of Detroit-area lacrosse is in the snow. Interestingly, none of the schools the men are playing are near the Atlantic or in particularly sunny climates, except maybe Utah.

We here in Detroit are on average only 92,955,807 miles from the sun, and the Atlantic Ocean is even closer than that.
