Hmm... 247 Sports updated its transfer list on July 14 to include Justin Thomas, a 5-11 guard from Morehead State would be an immediately eligible grad transfer. 247sports.com/Season/2020-Basketball/TransferPortal/. (I don't know when they added Thomas to the list, just that it was last updated on July 14). And Jeff Goodman's transfer list now says that Justin Thomas is transferring to Detroit (when that was added I don't know). watchstadium.com/college-basketballs-2019-20-midseason-transfer-list-10-31-2019/. But nothing I can find from Thomas or anyone else making the claim. Last year Thomas averaged 8.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists, with a 2/1 assist/turnover ratio.

Things seem to change around here day to day....

I emailed Jeff Goodman - the author of the transfer list and noted college basketball writer - here's the brief conversation:

Has Justin Thomas withdrawn yet from the NBA draft? If he and Datcher are coming here, then someone would have to become a walk-on. Like AD was made a walk-on two seasons ago. From what I understand, this is the only way this could work.

According to what I am hearing: 1) Thomas wants to come to U-D but we have not given him our last scholarship
2) We are leaning towards getting another Space Eater, and Datcher is a possibility
So nothing is set. We are probably going to land one more recruit -- just not sure which one.
And finally....leave it to the Mole to parce language and turn this into another commentary on our "branding failure." As far as I am concerned, it's always a good (no, great) moment when someone from outside of the area refers to us as "Detroit". Locally, we're U-D. Everywhere else we should want people to call us "Detroit."

So many rebrand fails here. Yeah, it's like HSScout never heard that the name is Detroit Mercy. How can we educate him on that?

Not really, it’s just that pretty everything regarding Titan basketball has been garbage since the second Ray McCallum was fired.

Mole isn't wrong on his branding comment. I love when we are referred to as Detroit or U-D, but it is a reminder that we have wasted a lot of time and resources getting people to call us something else.
As far as the roster goes, I would like to see us land Datcher and Thomas, if we can make room. Thomas seems like the type of guard we need to be a primary ball handler and set up guy. Datcher would provide bulk and height, and we can always use that. We added some size and more backcourt help already, but you never know how injuries, eligibility, player availability, etc., will impact the roster. We really need to show improvement in the win total this coming season. I remain hopeful.

It will be a shame if we lose this season. I'm feeling good about the program for the first time since that 5-1 conference start back in the January of 2019. If we did take Thomas, and Johnson were declared eligible, the problem for the coaches will be finding playing time for all the guards. In fact, it might even be better if Johnson has to sit a year. Otherwise, you know AD is a minimum 32 minutes per game (that would be about 5 minutes less than he's played each of his first two seasons), and you'd have Fraser and Thomas to split the point and Rose to back up AD at the 2 guard. Plus Cal for spot use as a spot-up three-point shooter.
If Thompson can do the work inside, we could be a huge match up problem for teams with AD, three tall guys--Waterman, Kuol, and Isiani--who can hit from outside the arc, Fraser and Rose to drive the hoops, and and Brandon to help clean up inside. And Datcher?

Verbal Commits now list Justin Thomas as transferring, but does not list a destination school. Likewise 247Sports and various local news sites.

Verbalcommits has always listed Justin Thomas as a grad transfer from the day he announced that he would enter the NBA draft or transfer. I believe he did that in March. I believe that if he wants to play this season in the NCAA, he must withdraw from the NBA draft by August 3rd. Incidentally, that is also the graduation date for summer school graduates at Mississippi State.
