And while our staunchest fans here bitch about our press release, here's an example of how the rest of the world viewed our decision and those very same words in our press release. Note that the UIC press release admits tacitly that its program has not yet completed the HL's return to play protocols.

I do not have any problems with the team's decision not to play. It appears to be a wise decision.

The why in the heck did we word it as "The pause for a week is only for the mental wellness and safety..." ? It sounds horrible worded that way. If you are correct, we are not pausing, the games were cancelled due to Covid-19 protocol concerns. We will continue to practice. That would have been a much more palatable wording for the press release. I don't know why the university chose those words. I didn't talk to Vowels for my information on this issue and I have not spoken to him in a very long time. The HL could have dictated the press release for all I know. And I really don't care. It's clear that the university wanted to emphasize that this pause was not due to any positive test results for COVID. You wanted to know why the games were canceled. I gave you the information on why the games were canceled. Have a good holiday weekend. You may not care about the wording but many of us do and the University should. This lead in the Free Press (who never writes about us) is how I got the news. Detroit Mercy men's basketball pauses for mental health reasons

Big Chuck is right. Led to that headline. That headline looks like shit.

Mountains and molehills.

It is absolutely a molehill when looked at in a vacuum. When combined with branding missteps, hiring missteps, recent cumulative records of the mens basketball program, etc... it is actually just another stone on the mountain. 😉

No one ever said it was a mountain or even a small hill. It has little to do with Basketball. It IMHO was a bad press release that was summarized in a major newspaper to leave a negative impression. My wife sat reading the Free Press this morning and out of the blue says "that's not good" when she saw the headline. She was not talking about basketball, but how it sounded for the University. It did not change after reading the article. I had never mentioned a word to her about this discussion. This is not the reaction we would like from our alumni and friends. After I explained what PTC had explained, she just said "why didn't they just say that?" udballer has it right. It is just one stone in a big wall, but in my mind an unforced error. People are getting awful touchy around here. Everyone knows I am a big supporter of the University and I get negative feedback over a comment about such a small item. Let's all have a Happy New Year. 2021 has to be better.

I would simply call everyone's attention to the final sentence in Vowels' quote in the press release:
The games at UIC were uncertain and our players have had to deal with a lot of issues so far. Solution: it's best for our program for the players to take some time away for mental wellness. I don't think it was necessary for the press release to spell out every detail.

Interesting question, if Chicago has regulations regarding lock downs and specific time periods in regard to the virus, why even play in Chicago, they should play these games at a site that is better to handle the games and travel. It's not like they have to return ticket sale money.

It has been rather hysterical watching some of the posters who have spent the past year downplaying COVID (and insisting college hoops games be played) now change their tune and agree with Vowels and Davis that canceling the UIC series is the right call. For some people, Vowels and Titan athletics can just do no wrong I guess.
Well, it is what is. Hopefully the vaccine improves the public health of our country and gets us to normalcy sooner than later. A happy and health new year to all.

I have been insistent that the season be played from day 1 and that we conduct it as close to normal as possible and I still feel Vowels is in over his head and a lousy AD!

So, based upon the replies and likes of about 6 or 7 posters in this thread, it appears that if Vowels were a good athletic director, he would have forced the men's team to spend the cost of the trip out of its budget, travel to Chicago to play one game at 7 pm on Saturday when there was no better than a 50% chance that UIC would have been in compliance with the league's protocol in time to play the game, and then risked the team being quarantined in Chicago for 14 days so that it would have not been able to play at Milwaukee the following Friday-Saturday and only would have been able to return to Detroit 1 or 2 days before the series scheduled with Green Bay at Calihan.
Also, if a poster who holds a different view than you about the public health impact of COVID but who also knows a number of unreported facts about this issue, in response to a post about knowing the story behind the story, posts those facts, then he somehow contradicts his previously expressed opinions about the public health impact of SARS-CoV-2. That's a B.S. argument even in a first year rhetoric class.
I get the concern about the words "mental health" in the press release. And I get the anger and disappointment over the 0-4 start in the HL with the two buzzer-beater losses to OU last weekend. At the moment, it no longer appears productive to share facts on this board with so many posters still mired in the anger stage of grieving. Hopefully, as time passes, that will change.
