I think Gates leaving Cleveland and Basille leaving Wright State will weaken the Horizon even more next year. Glad to see them go but yet I’m not!

To me Basile is a bit depressing, simply because that's one of the best situations you're going to get in the HL. He's on a winning team, the core of which has been together for a couple years, that will be (or at least would have been) a conference favorite again next year, with a realistic chance of making some real NCAA noise, that draws respectable crowds and that has a good game day atmosphere, playing for the Coach who recruited him. I don't blame Basile for wanting to try his hand in the big time--I'm sure he's thinking P6, and Wisconsin would seem a decent fit--but if the league can't keep a player in that position, its going to be really hard for anyone to keep the best players.

The rumor for the past two years has been that Nagy wanted out of Wright State. Milwaukee ruined that plan in 2021. Nagy's son graduates this year. Basile has been at WSU for 4 years. He was redshirted in 2018-19. Just sayin ...

Cleveland State walk-on Aria Eskandari, who played a total of 17 minutes in three years for Coach Gates, has hit the portal. That leaves Detroit as the only team not to have a player in the portal, unless we count Jamail Pink.

In any event, so far we and YSU are the only HL teams not to have anyone enter the portal since the season ended, although CSU's only loss is a rarely played walk-on.

I'm like the fool that keeps touching a hot stove and gets repeatedly burned - I just never learn my lesson.

Apparently Grant Basile from Wright State is a top transfer target for Notre Dame. Wisconsin might also have interest. We’re about to really see the next few weeks how mid majors are now just a farm system for the big boys.

Garrett Covington of Youngstown, a three-time Horizon All-Defensive selection, returned to YSU this year for his "bonus" covid season, but was injured in the third game of the season. With the injury redshirt season, he's still got a year of eligibility, and has now entered the transfer portal. Covington isn't a big scorer, but he can put the ball in the hoop, too, with over 1200 career points and a career 9.9 ppg average.

Wow, Basile and Holden. Wrong State is crumbling in full view, after a year in which they won an NCAA tournament game. I don't like Wrong but even I'm starting to feel sorry for them now. I know that Nagy is a PIA, but it makes you wonder how any mid-major can stay on top over the long term. This is definitely starting to shape up as our potential moment in the sun, IF we get two strong bigs - strong physically and strong mentally. Our coaches better be vetting these guys to find the right fits. We can't afford any more big egos, any more headcases. We need guys like BA (the player). In fact I would take two BAs at 6-6 230 who don't take prisoners over two 6-10 240 prima donnas. BA the player was everything we lack right now on this team.

The whispers for the past two years have been that Coach Scott Nagy has been looking to move on from WSU. I don't know if they are mere speculation like the type we see about our own coach or whether they are real. I believe the rumors were prompted by the financial issues that WSU has experienced recently. Nagy's son graduates this Spring. From the perspectives of the two players, they likely feel that this year they have accomplished all they could accomplish at WSU. Also, from a player's perspective, you have the most leverage in the portal if you can have more than 1 year of eligibility remaining and if you can use the one-time exception to avoid the waiver process. That applies to Basile and Holden. We've seen rumors of Basile going to ND and Wisconsin. The initial rumors about Holden involve Ohio State and Fordham. Again, much of this could be mere speculation. WSU does have Brandon Noel coming off the usual WSU big man redshirt first year. They did that both with Love and Basile. But the Raiders are clearly in rebuild mode now. A big tell about Nagy would be a transfer by Trey Calvin. Finally, it's clear that there is a lot of questionable communicating going on with players or their representatives before many players put their names in the portal. Like all mid-majors, WSU's best players are likely being poached by power conference teams. But I suspect that both players were open to these moves because they feel that they might be able to go farther on a power conference team.

Until Wright State got nailed by Basile and Holden putting their names in the portal, most of the HL players seeking transfer seemed very average or at least nonimpact players, except for Milwaukee's Gholsto at 14.3 ppg, who is going to Missouri.
