Last year, Three-Man-Weave picked us 9th. Their analysis was: So, this year, they call Bul "cheat code" after the fact, but their analytics didn't demonstrate any particular foresight into any of our players last year. And they picked Cleveland State 6th last year. The problem with analytics is that they keep you looking backwards and assuming that past performance (especially as to transfers down) predicts future results. Of course, I'm biased, but also I know a little about what we will be bringing to the floor this season as a team. I think we have been "misunderestimated."

Tristan Freeman at Fansided's Busting Brackets puts us at 5th. The whole Horizon can be found here: bustingbrackets.com/2021/10/29/horizon-league-basketball-preseason-power-rankings-2021-22-season/Here's our preview 5. Detroit Mercy Titans 2020-21 season record: 12-10 (10-6 in Horizon) Key losses – Bul Kuol (15.8 ppg), Marquell Fraser (7.2 ppg), Chris Brandon (5.2 ppg and 5.9 rpg) When talking about Detroit Mercy, the conversation starts and stops with star guard Antoine Davis. In three years, the 6’1 guard has averaged at least 24 ppg, 4.2 apg, and takes at least 10 three-pointers a game at 36%, while also shooting nearly 90% from the charity stripe. He’s one of, if not the best scorer in college basketball, and if it wasn’t for the team not finishing in the top-2 in any year, would’ve already been Conference Player of the Year. Part of the reason has been the lack of a supporting cast over the years. But that has been changing under head coach Mike Davis, who found a gem in freshman forward Noah Waterman. The 6’11 big man averaged 11.9 ppg and 4.5 rpg on 56% shooting from the field, including a whopping 53% from three-point range. If he can somewhat repeat those numbers over the course of a season, he could wind up being the best teammate Davis has had with the Titans. It also could be DJ Harvey, a former top-50 prospect that spent three years at Notre Dame and Vanderbilt before coming to the Horizon League. When healthy, he was a double-digit scorer and capable defender that could be a star at this level. Harvey would be the ideal replacement for Bul Kuol, who was the team’s second-leading scorer. Outside of returning Conference 6th Man of the Year Matt Johnson (8.3 ppg), the rest of Detroit’s roster has big question marks, particually in the frontcourt. Transfers Kevin McAdoo and Jordan Phillips add potential scoring depth but with Davis having the ball most of the time, they’ll have to show that they can score off the ball to see their production remain similar. There are multiple newcomers big men for Detroit, including Junior Collge transfer Mohamed Sylla, Prince Oduro, who averaged 9.1 ppg at Siena as a freshman but played very little at Mississippi State and South Florida, Madut Akec from South Florida, and returning role players, Buay Koka, Willy Isiani. If any of these guys can break out and provide some offensive production and any kind of interior defense, that could change the outlook of the Flames from a threat to win some games into one that could win the league. Just waiting on consistent production from the supporting group.

19 predictions have been placed on the table as of 11/1 at 10am. The average place of finish for the Titans is 4.5, with 5th place being the most frequent - 8 times (double the 2nd most frequent - 4th place/4 times).
Would a 4th or 5th place finish be acceptable Titans fans? I'm thinking anything less than a championship (unless we're the 2nd bid in a 2 bid League), would be considered a fail. This is likely the last season of AD and to not win anything during his career would be a massive disappointment to me and a blown opportunity, not taking advantage of having 4 seasons of the Program's (likely) all time leading scorer.

It's a good question Scout.
My thought is...I'd like to see at least 3rd place in the league Regular Season and make the finals of the HL tourney. Sure, I want to get greedy and want the daily-double and win both Conference titles but I don't know if that's a realistic thing to 'expect' per se.
We seemed to improve so much last year as the season went on that hopefully that carries over into this season and we are indeed closer to the top of the conference type of team. A huge benefit is that the off season wasn't impacted by covid restrictions, i.e. the team could get together and play and get to know each other. We also don't seem to have guys with big injuries waiting to get into the fold, nor guys waiting til January to be eligible. A big plus for us as we have several new faces we are putting into key roles this year. And, if we trust that we have a good coaching staff then this is the year we all ought to dream big.

But for any of us to presume that these "experts" know much more about our team than any of us is giving 98% of these people more credit than they have earned. They just read stats and go with the known quantities over us. How many of them last year at this time saw in Bul Kuol what our coaches saw in him when they recruited him here?

So, Bobby Mo's own student network picks RMU 6th over OU (which may be reasonable) and then more or less follows the consensus picks for the other slots. Interesting that the Colonials did not name Flavors as a notable addition. Wonder if they are getting negative feedback about him from O'Toole? Alternatively, O'Toole may be trying to keep him under the radar.

Sports Illustrated ranks all teams - we're picked 3rd in the Horizon at 160
(I didn't have time to sort out all the Horizon Teams)

Just to consolidate the HL teams in the list...
1) Wright State #102 2) Cleveland State #124 3) Detmer #160 4) NKU #174 5) MKE #205 - included this aside: "Milwaukee (No. 205) is perhaps the most interesting sub-200 team in the country thanks to the presence of Patrick Baldwin Jr., the five-star recruit and likely NBA lottery pick who’ll play for his dad, Pat, rather than Duke. Color us skeptical he’ll lead the Panthers to Horizon League glory." 6) BobMo #210 7) Pioneers #222 8) UIC #231
My aside...these last 4 teams is what is really going to kill the Horizon's RPI this year as a conference. You just can't have this many teams rated in the bottom 20% (or lower) of all teams in the nation much less 2 of them in the 300's. Ouch.
9) Youngstown #266 10) PFW #272 11) Green Bay #307 12) IUPUI #338

Just to consolidate the HL teams in the list... 3) Detmer #160Every time I see that name I think of Ty Detmer throwing seven picks in his first start as a Detroit Lion.
