I heard he was on campus yesterday, but not sure if it was just a visit.

My alumni Spiritus magazine Spring 2022 edition arrived in the mail today. There is a cover article on Donald Taylor who will be the new University president in less than two weeks.
FWIW: “Athletics is one area where he sees the possibility of creating community. Strong athletics lead to strong school spirit.”

FWIW: “Athletics is one area where he sees the possibility of creating community. Strong athletics lead to strong school spirit.” The next paragraph was even more encouraging and should be heeded by the Athletic Department. "So how do these things happen? As might be expected, Taylor has a process. Securing resources, promoting the vision, communicating University priorities and urging people to think more entrepreneurially are the first steps."

There is incredible lethargy right now around Titan athletics, including if not especially the flagship program, men's basketball. I hope the new President sees athletics as a priority, and if it is a priority, I think it is necessary to clean house in the Department from top to bottom. The General Administration and the Department needs to show that they care about the overall fan experience, and the leadership needs to be both demanding and inspiring to insist that those in the Department actually do things right.

Well he has been on the job for 5 days now + what he absorbed in his visits.

In today’s mail I received an invite to “come meet Dr. Taylor and hear his vision for University of Detroit Mercy.” September 8 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. I will be out of town that day but would be interested in getting a report on the presentation from anyone who might get the opportunity to attend the forum.

Dr. Taylor was formally inaugurated as the University’s 26th president today. He did mention Titan athletics in his remarks at the afternoon ceremony in Calihan Hall. No real specifics, but he said a strong athletic program was important to the success of UDM and referred to it as the “front door” to how many people are introduced to the school.

So is anyone else besides me starting to think that President Taylor might be telling us what we want to hear and then back to the business as usual approach. Does he feel that being last in just about every athletic category is how a strong athletic program helps to establish a “front door”. I hope huge changes are in the works and that we have a nice inviting front door not a rusty old gate with iron bars.

UP - I know you have family issues tying you down up there so maybe you're just shooting off from afar. The new President is being decidedly candid about his desire to change the inertia around campus. That includes issues related to how the U-D Professors Union holds us back, etc. etc. If you are just tired of waiting for change, I get it. But if you have support for your accusations, please share. As Larry said, the new Pres. is working to institute change across campus. He knows Athletics is our "window to the world" and he wants to open that window. No need to dump on the new guy unless you have facts that say otherwise. Everyone I know who interacts with Dr. Taylor comes away impressed. I love Dr. Garibaldi, but Dr. Taylor is much more open and willing to expose the warts when he sees them. If you were on the Titan Club Board, you would know exactly what I'm saying.
