PT nailed it, somethings get beyond fixing, in happens in the business world all the time, go back to whatever the Dow 500 was in 1930, there is probably about 10 percent of companies on that list still in business, No RCA, no NY Central, no Pachard, no Railway Express, soon no Sears, and so on. Forty years ago Loyola of New Orleans dropped all sports, and the school endured, so there is a footprint. We here hope for a St Louis or even a St Peters rebirth, it may not be in the cards. Some here talk about a D2 or D3 program, but the direction may be Loyola of NO.

Loyola of New Orleans still has athletics, competes at the NAIA level. www.loyno.edu/campus-life/athleticsThe Wolfpack program was discontinued in 1972, but reinstated in 1991.

If this whole thing is beyond fixing or seemingly impossible, at least in the near term, without major changes, then what are we all doing here?? If it's not Mike Davis that's the problem, but our campus, infrastructure, and leadership, etc are what's holding us back from getting good recruits and being a winner, then why bother rooting for this team?? Sounds like, unless we get some dumb luck, that we're doomed to mid pack at the best in the Horizon League and realistically there's no hope. And why bother giving money if the people incharge don't have the same vision or emphasis on athletics that we need to succeed?? PTC, who I don't always agree with, but respect very much, has given me a lot to consider...

In the current era of the transfer portal and the one-time transfer exception, we need to offer a competitive experience to athletes considering us. We are competing against schools with newer facilities and larger on-campus experiences. And we need to have savvy marketing people pushing for higher attendance with all sorts of promotions, gimmicks, etc. If you had the choice of two hotels at which to stay on a trip and the cost to stay was about the same, would you choose the newer, freshly decorated one? Or would you choose the older, dingier one?

But now it's run down and the owners don't seem inclined to make repairs, even though there are lots of Covid related grants (transfers) out there making it slightly easier of a turn around. The new fresher hotel is more convenient and easier. Memories of the dingy hotel keep me urning for the past, but they can't even figure out what chain (branding) they want to go with. If the old dingy hotel can't or doesn't want to help itself, does it deserve my business any more??

Hopefully, the change in management coming on July 1st coupled with strong and sound direction from the board of directors who reportedly want to see the problems fixed quickly will produce enough prompt results that you and other fans plus future players will want to stay with us again when the season opens in November.

The point of my post was to identify some issues that affect our recruiting in this new era of the transfer portal and the one-time exception. As a small private city school, we need to address these issues in order to remain competitive in what has become an era of de facto free agency. If we let these things linger for many more years, then we could become a Packard.

What can we do to wrestle the decision making control away from the bean counters? They will not add to anything just squeeze it until there is nothing left. The answer is that strategic thinking for Athletics must come from the Board of Trustees and the new President. Also, the department needs employees who can think strategically about the issues of attendance and facilities and other employees who are very customer service oriented. Finally, effective September 1, 2022, the university needs to rebrand Athletics as the Detroit Titans so that the city's name becomes more than just a perceived adjective for that other word that shall not be uttered.

The coaches were in frequent contact with Watts for over a month. He visited us. He worked out. We were in the mix. In the end, he chose a campus that has a more big school feel to it. My reply has nothing to do with who is the head coach. Do you want things to improve here? I am telling you what we need to do in order to compete for recruits more effectively. We need facilities and fans in the stands. Davis has been able to get the team back to where Ray had the team in his last 3 years here. You want a better record than that? I'm telling you what the coaches have said repeatedly they need to improve their competitiveness in the recruiting wars. Housing, nutrition, sports medicine. And then fans in the stands. It's that basic. It requires viewing Athletics as an asset rather than a high school extracurricular. It requires professional management in Athletics. If the university made its own financial capital commitment equal to about 15% of the cost of building student union and acquiring the Novi campus, these problems could be solved. And the announcement of such a commitment would likely drive more donations to Athletics. I had a temporary small quibble with your comment concerning Coach McCallum, but the rest of your post was so on target I will keep it to myself. 😁 That was a great post.
