The season is finally here. In a rare (perhaps unprecedented) event, every team ranked in the top 25 is in action today. Special thanks for Arbor Drugs for sponsoring this year's scoreboard. And now a word from Joe D.

Scores for November 7, 2022.
College basketball finally got going and while there were no real compelling matchups on the schedule, we managed to get some exciting games. Horizon League: Some expected blowouts both ways, a good win for YSU, and a crushing loss for the two time defending league champs. Overall, an ugly night for the league.
Oakland 92, Defiance 27 Milwaukee 102, Milwaukee School of Engineering 46 #22 Michigan 75, Fort Wayne 56 Youngstown State 92, Canisius 81 Iowa State 88, IUPUI 39 Notre Dame-OH 72, Cleveland State 68 Ohio State 91, Robert Morris 53 Kent State 79, NKU 57 Indiana State 80, Green Bay 53
Local Teams: Michigan State 73, Northern Arizona 55 EMU 75, Wayne State 66. Orlando Lovejoy was high man for Eastern with 18, as the Eagles put 5 players in double figures. Emoni Bates did not show up on the boxscore, and apparently did not play. Minnesota 61, WMU 60. Close but no cigar for the Broncos. Toledo 85, Valpo 70. Good win for the Rockets. Valpo hasn't yet got the bounce that Loyola did joining the MVC.
Other games of interest: #1 North Carolina 69, UNC Wilmington 56 #2 Gonzaga 104, North Florida 63 Harvard 68, Morehouse 63 DePaul 72, Loyola-MD 66 #16 Villanova 81, LaSalle 68. Nova opens up the season with a Big Five matchup; nice choice of opponent. #4 Kentucky 95, Howard 63. #13 Indiana 88, Morehead State 53 #14 TCU 73, Arkansas Pine Bluff 72. TCU dodges the bullet after trailing by 20 earlier. Marquette 79, Radford 69
Mid Major win of the Day? Let's see... Stetson 83, Florida State 74? Impressive performance for the underdog. Sam Houston State 52, Oklahoma 51? That's an eye opener. UC Davis 75, California 65? Of course the PAC 12 would throw their hat in the ring when it comes to MMWOTD. All worthy candidates, but I'm going with this one: Florida Gulf Coast 74, USC 61. I chose this because of the added factor of it being the "Andy Enfield Classic", his former school vs current school. I'm sure the FGCU kids feel good about beating the coach who left their program for the big time. FGCU trailed by one at the half but exploded in the second half, eventually leading by 20. It wasn't a fluke.
Gentlemen, college basketball is back!

Sounds like a good night for mid-majors, if a very bad one for the HL. At least one other mid-major lost to a D-2 school last night, with UMKC falling to Lincoln.

After a packed Monday, there's a light schedule tonight.
Detroit 93, Rochester 65. Rochester hung tough with the Titans overall, keeping within 10-15 points for much of the game, but Detroit closed on a 28-9 run. The Titans had balanced scoring from their starters, but very little contributions from the bench. The starters also played more minutes than I would liked to see against Rochester, but on the other hand it is a group that hasn't played together much.
Horizon League: Purdue 83, Milwaukee 54. Another blowout loss for the HL.
Other scores: Georgetown 99, Coppin State 89 (OT) Providence 66, Rider 65 Duquesne 91, Montana 63 South Carolina 80, South Carolina State 77
Mid Major Win of the Day: Some good candidates (SC State, Coppin State, Rider) fell short, so let's give it to Sacred Heart for a road win over Hartford, 77-70.

Scoreboard for November 9, 2022. Another light slate.
Fairleigh Dickinson University 106, Mercy 66. I didn't even know we had a game tonight! Wait...never mind.
Horizon League: Davidson 102, Wright State 97 (2OT). The Raiders missed a chance for a big win, losing a 16 point halftime lead. Senior guard Trey Calvin scored 37 for WSU, but took a lot of shots to hit that number. Michigan native Foster Loyer scored 38 for Davidson.
Robert Morris 84, Pitt-Greensburg 49.
Youngstown State 90, UT-Martin 72. Second impressive performance in a row for the Penguins. Dwayne Cohill led YSU with 19.
Drake 80, IUPUI 48. Looks like another long season for the Jags.
Other Games:
Seton Hall 79, Monmouth 52.
LSU 74, UMKC 63. The Roos had an early lead over the Tigers but couldn't hold it.
South Dakota State 68, Boise State 66. Nice win for the Summit League.
San Diego 79, Florida Gulf Coast 73. FGCU crashes back to Earth after their season opening win over USC.
Mid Major Win of the Day:
Bellarmine 67, Louisville 66. Easy pick tonight as Bellarmine took a 14 point lead in the first half and held off a late Cardinals rally to win a squeaker.

Scores for November 10, 2022.
Horizon League: Cincinnati 68, Cleveland State 59. CSU might not be as bad as they looked in their season opener. It was a one point game at the half. The Michigan connection showed up for Cleveland State as Spider Johnson had 12 points and six boards and Drew Lowder hit for 10.
Local teams: Western Michigan 99, Goshen 62. First win for Coach Stephens. Marquette 97, Central Michigan 73. Kevin Miller had 14 for CMU, but also had a whopping 9 turnovers.
Other games of interest: #5 Kansas 82, North Dakota State 59 #9 Creighton 96, North Dakota 61 #12 Texas 82, Houston Christian 31. I had to look up Houston Christian. Turns out it's the school formerly known as Houston Baptist. They changed their name to be more inviting to Christian students beyond just those who are Baptist. #13 Indiana 101, Bethune-Cookman 49. #25 Texas Tech 78, Texas Southern 54 Virginia Tech 78, Lehigh 52. It was over early. Ohio State 82, Charleston Southern 56. This one was over early, too. Penn State 90, Loyola-MD 65 Maryland 71, Western Carolina 51 USC 95, Alabama State 68. Part of the PAC12/SWAC Challenge, that will include some PAC 12 teams playing at SWAC arenas. St. Mary's 79, Vermont 53 San Francisco 60, Cal Poly 48. Colgate 77, Brown 68. Nice road win for the toothpaste brand. Western Ketucky 66, Eastern Kentucky 60. Battle in the Bluegrass State. Towson 67, UMass 55. Solid win.
Mid Major Win of the Day: Southern Illinois 61, Oklahoma State 60. Walt Frazier's school beats Hank Iba's school. Next up for OSU is a road game against the Oakland Grizzlies.

Walt Frazier was a Knick teammate of Dave DeBusschere when they beat the Lakers for the NBA championship.

Scores for Novermber 11, 2022. Lots of action tonight.
Boston College 70, Detroit 66. Some good, some bad, an all too familiar result.
Horizon League: Bowling Green 87, Oakland 81. Leon Ayers had 26 to lead Bowling Green.
#22 Michigan 88, EMU 83. My personal game of the night, as the Eagles and Wolverines slugged it out in Downtown Detroit. I had several friends who attended, and they all say it was a great environment and a great game. It is a failure on the part of our program that we have not put ourselves in position to take advantage of having a great arena like that just a few miles from our campus. Emoni Bates put on the type of performance that people have been predicting for him since he was 15, scoring 30 points in a very efficient performance. (UDBaller, at one point Emoni had 17 points on 9 shots!) Good to see him bounce back from his troubled off season, and good for EMU for battling UM so tough. There is a lot to like about both teams.
#2 Gonzaga 64, Michigan State 63. You can bet that the Spartans aren't taking any moral victories from this one. They will be encouragd by the performance of junior center Mady Sissoko (14 and 9 in 25 minutes).
Toledo 93, UAB 85. The Rockets were down 7 at the break.
Other Games of Interest: #1 North Carolina 102, Charleston 86. The Heels were down seven at the half 50-43! #3 Houston 81, St. Joseph's 55 #4 Kentucky 77, Duquesne 52 #5 Baylor 87, Norfolk St. 70 #7 Duke 84, South Carolina Upstate 38 #8 UCLA 93, Long Beach State 69 #10 Arkansas 74, Fordham 48 Temple 68, #16 Villanova 64. Biggest win of Temple coach Aaron McKie's career. First loss in the Big Five for Nova in a while. #19 San Diego State 82, BYU 75. For anyone interested, Noah Waterman had 1 point for BYU, playing 10 minutes. #24 Dayton 74, SMU 62.
Louisiana 75, Harvard 61 UConn 86, Boston U 57 Tulane 75, McNeese 58 Kansas State 63, California 54. KSU is rebuilding in year one of a year coach, so a road win over a Power 5 team is a good building block. West Virginia 81, Pitt 56. Good rivalry win for Bob Huggins. South Carolina 60, Clemson 58 Loyola-Chicago 70, UIC 63. Game was at UIC as two of our former conference mates who have moved on to better leagues squared off. Missouria 92, Penn 85. Dennis Gates goes to 2-0. DePaul 86, Western Illinois 74 Portland 98, Portland St 91.
There were several options for Mid Major Win of the Day. Let's take a look. UC Irvine 69, #21 Oregon 56 (The PAC 12 never disapoints in this category.) Southern Miss 60, Vanderbilt 48. Bad loss for head coach Jerry Stackhouse, who just got an extension. UCF 68, Florida State 54. Not sure what is wrong with FSU, but credit them for traveling to UCF for a road game.
Those are worthy candidates, but my pick is Grambling 83, Colorado 74. This game was at Grambling, as part of the PAC 12/SWAC Legacy Series. Colorado was a 15 point favorite, coming off a win in their season opener. Grambling's victory was no fluke; they were up 14 at the half. Their fans were going crazy. It's a win they will remember for awhile.

View AttachmentWaterman got 18 bench minutes in BYU's opener, 10 minutes his second game. Now averaging 2.0 points a game. He would look really nice on our present team he would be better off and so would we. Well at least he has some nice dorms to stay in probably will not help his basketball career but some time young people loose focus. We will see how this plays out but in Detroit he might have been a star. Now he is breathing that clean Utah air while he is getting slivers in his ass!

Mohamed Sylla played 6 minutes in his first game at Boise St., 0 points, 1 rebound. (Edit update: he didn’t get any playing time in Saturday night’s game.)
DJ Harvey appears to be no longer playing basketball. His LinkedIn page shows he is looking for opportunities in sports journalism and marketing.

Awesome game to watch last night. Tyson Acuff also missed a couple of of late 3's that rattled out which could have made the game extra-interesting. At one point I noticed Bates was 11-15 from the field. Solid performance by him.
