#22 Michigan 88, EMU 83. My personal game of the night, as the Eagles and Wolverines slugged it out in Downtown Detroit. I had several friends who attended, and they all say it was a great environment and a great game. It is a failure on the part of our program that we have not put ourselves in position to take advantage of having a great arena like that just a few miles from our campus. Emoni Bates put on the type of performance that people have been predicting for him since he was 15, scoring 30 points in a very efficient performance. (UDBaller, at one point Emoni had 17 points on 9 shots!) Good to see him bounce back from his troubled off season, and good for EMU for battling UM so tough. There is a lot to like about both teams. Awesome game to watch last night. Tyson Acuff also missed a couple of of late 3's that rattled out which could have made the game extra-interesting. At one point I noticed Bates was 11-15 from the field. Solid performance by him. I think for maybe the first time ever, Emoni is getting some real coaching. If he listens and works within the team concept, he will be successful at EMU, and more importantly, so will the team.

I have always thought Detroit is a good college basketball town, Friday night confirmed that people will come out to see a good show. UDM portrays itself as Detroit's "D1" team, and that's it. If UDM put on a show as EMU did Friday, and had their basketball program so that people wanted to be there, they could play most of their games downtown and "old" Callahan wouldn't matter. I could see, the Daytons and Xavier of the world coming to play here, the non-HL schedule could be amazing.

Sam, I'm sure Bates had good coaching at Memphis, I think a player of his talent needs the right program, one that fits. His coming to EMU fits him and Heath, it's a win/win.

The future life of this program is getting the student body involved not appeasing a bunch of old farts who will not be around in 10-12 years. Moving the games away from campus is not that great of an idea also you are comparing a couple of schools that spit out alums from a student body of 20 - 50 thousand rather than 5000.

I disagree about good coaching at Memphis. Hardaway is a first time coach. Under him, the teams have consistently underachieved expectations. There was coaching staff turnover during last season. Larry Brown is there but I don't know how much actual coaching he does these days. I think Emoni is a a good situation at Eastern. Veteran head coach, experienced assistants, good supporting cast.

Scores for November 13, 2022.
HORIZON LEAGUE. Two league teams punched up in class. Oklahoma State 91, Oakland 62. I was kind of surprised by the margin, seeing as OSU was coming off a loss to a mid major and OU was at home. The Cowboys played a great offensive game, shooting over 50% from the floor and from three, and an even 90% from the line. The Grizz put four players in double figures, including Bowman who scored 14 in nine minutes.
Notre Dame 88, Youngstown State 81. Good effort from the Penguins.
LOCAL TEAMS. Central Michigan 76, Eastern Illinois 60. Kevin Miller had 23 points and 9 assists for the Chips. Valparaiso 81, WMU 65. The Broncos trailed by 4 at the half, but Valpo pulled away in the second. Lamar Norman and Trey Maddox hit double figures for WMU (1-2).
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST. Colorado 78, #11 Tennessee 66. A few days ago, the Buffaloes were the victim of the mid major win of the day and last night they took out the #11 Volunteers. College basketball, man. Cincinnati 87, Eastern Kentucky 69 Harvard 92, Elon 77 Davidson 75, VMI 71 SE Louisiana 76, Wyoming 72. This was a real upset. The Cowboys, picked as one of the top mid majors in the country, were 22 point favorites. George Mason 73, American University 56 San Diego 74, NJIT 64. San Diego off to a 3-0 start under Steve Lavin. Pepperdine 91, Alabama State 62 Loyola-MD 75, Brown 70 Missouri 82, Lindenwood 53. Mizzou is staring off the season playing 9 straight mid majors in year one of the Dennis Gates era. Seattle 83, Portland State 71 Saint Mary's 63, North Texas 33 Hawaii 71, Eastern Washington 51
MID MAJOR WIN OF THE DAY Stop me if you've heard this before, but today's victim is another PAC12 team. I'm going with Texas Southern 67, Arizona State 66. Going with this one for the significance of Texas Southern taking advantage of the rare opportunity of a home game against a high major team and the fact that ASU was a 12 point favorite. Wyoming was a bigger favorite, but this game has a bigger impact on the college basketball world.

What to Watch For November 14, 2022. Televised action is heavy on the Big East tonight.
6:30 PM FS2 Delaware State vs Villanova. In the first year of the Kyle Neptune Era, we'll see how Nova bounces back after a loss. They should roll DSU.
7:00 PM BTN DePaul vs Minnesota. Big game for these two squads. Both are in the second year of a rebuild under a new coach. A win in the Gavitt Games is a good building block.
7:00 PM FS1 Butler vs Penn State. Another Gavitt Games match up.

I live in Nashville now, about 5 blocks from Belmont, where my daughter went. She's a signed Songwriter down here now so we moved here to bring our immediate family together again, and I am working locally.
Anyhoo...since I don't get to every home game anymore, I attended a few Belmont games last year and I just got home from a true backyard brawl: Belmont at Lipscomb. Both schools are private Christian Universities about 3 miles apart. They are located on the same road, Belmont Blvd, so they call it "The battle of the Boulevard."
I wanted to see it for myself. Final Score Lipscomb 77, Belmont 75. Belmont lost some of its best players (one stud to transfer, their big guy to graduation). They will be probably be middle of the pack in the Missouri Valley (yes, another school that leaped ahead of us, moving this year from the Ohio Valley to the Missouri Valley). The game was a tremendous defensive struggle early but the teams figured out how to attack each other's man to man D and it was a great back-and-forth game. Lipscomb hadn't won since 2017 (they play every year) in this real rivalry so when their big man hit a layup with one second left, and then they intercepted the final inbound, it was bedlam. There must have been 500 students rushing the court and the celebration was a long one. Belmont had almost as many students behind one basket.
It was exactly what I expected - a true rivalry game. The huge dueling student sections, the back-and-forth battle and the intensity of the effort made a great night.
Lipscomb has a C+ plus arena - nothing flashy but nice new plastic seats throughout. The only disappointment was an announced crowd of 3,772 - about half full. I had heard this game sells out every year and was surprised at the attendance. It was a Monday Night and it is obvious that unless you're in a small town or you're UK or Louisville or MSU, it's just hard to draw the casual fan anymore. It might have been a sellout on a Saturday, but not tonight. The game has changed. It's a great game if you were there tonight, but the heydey of college hoops is gone.
We haven't had a crowd like that in years. The students start everything. We need 313 to take off early this year and energize the arena.
I would love to play Belmont home and home every year. It's a solid program that will probably never go Gonzaga on us, but will always compete.
Go Titans!

Scores for November 14, 2022. Upsets galore.
HORIZON LEAGUE Fort Wayne 111, Manchester 31 Chicago State 68, IUPUI 58. The Jags stay winless.
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST #3 Houston 83, Oral Roberts 45 #5 Baylor 95, Northern Colorado 62 #8 UCLA 86, Norfolk State 56 #10 Creighton 94, Holy Cross 65 #19 Illinois 103, Monmouth 65 #23 Texas Tech 64, Louisiana Tech 55. Technically speaking.
Villanova 60, Delaware State 50. Tougher than I expected. DePaul 69, Minnesota 53. Solid Gavitt Games win for a rebuilding program. Penn State 68, Butler 62. Solid Gavitt Games win for a rebuilding program. Duquesne 96, South Carolina State 71 St. Joseph's 63, Lafayette 59 Georgia 77, Miami-OH 70 Utah State 96, Santa Clara 74 Colorado State 77, Weber State 52 Utah 70, Idaho State 58 Washington 78, Utah Tech 67
UPSETS! Maine 69, Boston College 64. BC still suffering from player unavailability. But still... Florida Atlantic 76, Florida 74. FAU won on two free throws with 30 seconds left. Troy 79, Florida State 72. Tough night for Panhandle State high majors. Speaking of unavailable players, FSU has six scholarship players that haven't played yet this season. Texas A&M-Commerce 73, Air Force 69 (OT)
Mid Major Win of the Day: Northwestern State over #15 TCU. The Horned Frogs were a 21.5 point favorite. TCU got a lot of preseason love from the "experts". If they still had press clippings, I would wonder of their players had been reading them.
