I saw my old high school DeLaSalle’s basketball schedule today, the Pilots have a game with Ypsilanti Lincoln at Calihan Hall. It’s part of the Catholic High School League Showcase scheduled for December 10, assume there are multiple games as part of the event.
It appears all three rounds of the 2023 CHSL tournament will take place at Marian High School. The championship game is on the same date (February 25) the MBB Titans have their last regular season home game, possibly the reason the finals are not at UDM. Oakland and Eastern Michigan have been hosting some of these high school championship events of late, but I noticed both schools have home MBB games that last Saturday in February. In the past, the CHSL championships always took place on a Sunday, but I think the local diocese has been recently discouraging athletic events on that day of the week.
The game pitting the champions of the CHSL and the Detroit Public School League will take place at Calihan on Thursday, March 2.

UD Jesuit to play against Clarkston in that CHSL set of games.
Can’t imagine Marian able to accommodate the typical crowd for the catholic league finals. Too bad it can’t be at calihan, sigh. Hopefully PSL finals are there and then good that Operation Friendship is at the Hall.

Really glad that Operation Friendship is happening at Calihan. I hope that the new President recognizes the importance of having events like that on campus. Calihan used to be the favorite place to play for Detroit area high school players and coaches.

With their 65-47 victory over Catholic Central, Brother Rice advances to the Catholic League’s “Bishop Championship” game this Friday at historic Calihan Hall. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 pm. They will face the winner of tomorrow's semifinal game between UD Jesuit and DeLaSalle.
Also on Friday, Gabriel Richard will take on the winner of tomorrow’s match between Liggett and Loyola in the “Cardinal Championship.”

Congrats to Rice. I hadn't realized it had been that long since they had won the title.

I just saw some video of the championship game. There was a great rockin’ crowd in Calihan, despite the last minute time change and snowstorm on the near horizon. It’s a shame we can’t even draw half that number of fans for the Titans’ games.

It’s a shame we can’t even draw half that number of fans for the Titans’ games. I think that's a result of decades of the administration ignoring the thousands of basketball fans in the area when it comes to marketing and promotion. For a long time the school acted like they didn't need to market to the surrounding community. They've made some efforts in recent years, but it's way late.

We have one player from the Detroit metro area. That can't help.

I promise I'm not being that guy, you know more about UD basketball than I could ever hope to. But you don't think Terry Tyler, John Long and Dave D, all local guys, helped boost attendance? I know most probably came because we won with those players, but certainly there were some curious locals who might not have been UD fans who did come out to watch them play because they were local guys.

TitansForever, you may be right, but my sense was that it was the winning that was driving that attendance, and the fact that a lot of those players were local was an added plus. That was also a different era, where college basketball recruiting in general was much more localized. LA kids went to UCLA, Chicago kids went to DePaul, New York kids stayed home. I think everyone had local heavy rosters back then. The Harding years were just before my time, so I don't remember how many local players they had on the roster. I do know that attendance under Harding wasn't what it became under Vitale and Gaines. I certainly respect your opinion and observations, and maybe more local players would help drive attendance. Hopefully we'll see us locking in some of those good high school players and transfers who are local. Hurst is a good pick up, and I like the offer to the kid from Brother Rice in the class of 2024. All things being equal, I would love to have a successful U-D team made up mostly of Detroit area/Michigan players.
