Liddell has worked out well….and he’s from Alabama State.

Big men for next year will arrive thru the transfer portal and JUCO. Sounds like business as usual. Grab a couple bigs who averaged 3 pts, 3 rebounds at South Alabama and hope they work out better here. It's a frustrating strategy but seems to be a necessary one in today's CBB climate. The end result is that we need to cross our fingers and hope the guy we picked is the next Gerald Liddell and not the next Taurean Thompson. I suspect the coaching staff crosses their fingers as well. The only big that can not return next year is Koka. So it is possible we have Parks,Liddell,Anderson and Jones back. According to Verbal Commits at this point we have 3 scholarships left.

The good news is a local kid who could have had opportunities elsewhere committed to the program.

However, before we go after the next 3 pt/3 rb transfer, it'll be more important to get some of these guys who can come back TO actually come back. IF Liddell can come back (not sure), will he? Will Moss come back? Will Stone come back? If YES to all the above, then we will have the foundation of next year's team already in place - not only to have guys who we know can play a solid 32 minutes/game, but guys who have been here, know the system, know the coaching staff, and can be leaders on next year's team.
That makes it so much easier to find those add-on players. They won't have to come in and be next Gerald Liddell. We will never have another 26 ppg a game star capable of going off for 40 pts or making a fallaway from 28 feet, but we would have the beginnings of building a Program (which I think is even more important, because no player can possibly be more important than having a Program). I guarantee that MD will be on the prowl for a guy who makes Rocket Watts look ordinary (which he is). With the guys above coming back plus Kyle plus Jones/Tankersley, that's the core of a team. A team that needs two more bigs and another big scorer, but the CORE of a returning team. We haven't had that happen in awhile. Hopefully we'll be looking for guys who won't NEED to be stars, but rather to fill roles.
I'm also excited about our new recruit, because of what he represents. But who knows if he'll be ready to help next year. He might be really good. Or he might be too slow/too short to play Div. I hoops. If he's Iyapo Montgomery (someone who kinda fit the same mold) then we'd have to take that outcome. Knowing that Iyapo was neither an immediate contributor or a star. But he became an important contributor to a winning team and that made him a good recruit.

I dont know that I'd classify either Anderson or Jones as a returning "big", despite their stature.

Anyone know for sure what Liddell's eligibiity next year is? Verbal Commits shows him with another year, and some reports (247 Sports) said he had two years left when he transferred here, but other reports said 1 year left when he came to UofD, and I don't think he's eligible next year. He played 12 games for Texas in 2018-19, including 5 NIT games in March, which would kill any redshirt opportunity. In 2019-20 he was out after January 20 after playing in 15 games--I think that's both too many games and too late a date to be red-shirted. In 2020-21 he only played 7 games through mid-December, but everybody got a redshirt season that year due to Covid. Then last year he played a full season for Alabama State. So... 2019 Texas 2020 Texas 2021 Covid Year (Texas) does not count against eligibility 2022 Alabama State 2023 Detroit
That's 4 yrs of eligibility used up after accounting for the Covid year. I don't see how he's eligible next year, though I sure would like it if he were.

Detroit Free Press article (behind paywall), mentions the major contributions North Farmington (15-1) is getting from Titan commit Hurst: “How North Farmington boys basketball keeps pulling off big wins far away from home” www.freep.com/story/sports/high-school/2023/02/13/michigan-high-school-basketball-north-farmington-boys-chelsea-girls/69897218007/Recently scored 24 against Chicago’s DePaul Prep. Averaging 22 ppg this season, scoring down slightly from last season but now evolving into more of a passer. Mentions his change in diet and better game playing shape. Relative to signing with Detroit Mercy: “It’s like the weight was lifted off his shoulders,” (coach) Negoshian said. “You’re less stressed out worrying about it. People think it’s a joy to be recruited like that. But if you talk to kids, they don’t enjoy it that much because the stress is always on you about it, and everyone asking about it.”

Regarding Liddell; I'm wondering if his 2020-21 season is considered a 'traditional' redshirt and he also gets an extra year of eligibility due to Covid.

I don't think the discussion of Liddell's eligibility belongs on the Ryan Hurst thread.

North Farmington plays Troy today, and if they advance as expected would play the winner of the UD Jesuit/OLSM game (in progress as I write). With a win on Wednesday, North Farmington and Ryan Hurst would play in a quarterfinal game at Calihan Hall next week, on Tuesday.
