Shannon Sharpe was the co-host for the sports opinion and debate show this morning on SiriusXm telling the Fox audience that Marivich career record will stand. He was excited about the possibility. I support AD to break the record and put his money where his mouth is. @ Calvin Johnson best NFL receiver you would have broken all the receiver records if you didn't retire earlier. CALVIN is class act.

It’s the topic of discussion on 91.7 sports radio right now. The hosts for the most part are cool with the concept of AD playing in the CBI to get the record. FWIW, everybody calling the school “U of D.” How nice they are cool with it today. Yesterday they were pretty much trash him on 97.1 sport radio. JDetroit, Agreed Valenti and Rico ripped on AD yesterday. Today on 97.1 it's totally different Karsch and Anderson had some positive chat today about last nights game. Overall, they agreed it was good publicity for the University and hoped AD would have the chance to beat the record in the CBI tournament.

My thoughts are the same every year. If you have a chance to play more games, you play. We wouldn't be the first team to play in a post season tourney with an under .500 record. Beyond giving AD a shot at the record, it is good experience for the guys on the team who will be coming back. Pay it and play it. I agree with this, and I believe it fits with Coach Davis’ philosophy as well (even without the record chase). Last year we played in The Basketball Classic as a below .500 team, losing to FGCU in the first round. I also recall a year-end Zoom call (not sure about the year) where Coach expressed disappointment that some players chose not to play, and that he had to decline the opportunity.

www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-basketball/news/cbi-detroit-mercy-antoine-davis-pete-maravich-record/oajfrkfrf8bkbdpqvupseonmThe above article, to me, suggests that CBI is very interested in us. We’ve already stated we will accept an invitation. Seems to me discussions are probably already well underway. CBI doesn’t have much to lose. As I’ve documented, they have a history of taking a few sub .500 teams most years. We would bring some viewership. Maybe the last turn of the screw means we have to have Vitale agree to promote the game with some tweets or even call in during a game for a few minutes. If I had to bet, I’d say we are playing in the CBI. Right now it’s probably negotiating the final pieces. It would be beneficial for CBI to book us very soon so that they can announce and promote their tournament before all the noise of conference tournaments starts.

The other day all of the backhanded compliments I was hearing came from Karsch and Anderson. They'd referenced the morning show (Stoney and Jansen) discussing the need for an asterisk if he breaks the record... but I didn't hear that first hand. I think we should go and I think Coach should pay the entrance fee out of his pocket.

Also says $40,000 worth of NIL money will be divided between the four semifinalists. Personally, I think that’s a really cool thing. And I think this team could be semifinalists. Maybe this is one way that NIL is changing college athletics. I want our program to be known as one that does stuff like this and helps players develop as much as possible. We can make that $27,000 (and any other costs we incur) with one buy game next year easily.

That was 2021, when we closed the season 11-2 to finish 12-10 after losing to NKU by a point in the HL tournament. If I recall, Brandon was one guy who didn't want to play, and it was a reason he transferred.

If you made $500k yearly, and your son would go down as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history for the low price of $27,000... would you write that check? I don't think the entry fee is any kind of obstacle.

I like the CBI’s 2023 format, bracketed tournament in a single (warm weather) location over the course of five days. In the past, the CBI and CIT formats were sort of made-up as teams progressed, you never were sure where and when the next game would be played, there was often extensive travel and it seemed to run almost a couple weeks. One of those tournaments even had a best-two-out-of-three setup for the championship some years which added more time, travel and expense.
Is there a CIT or Basketball Classic planned this year? Don’t know for sure, but it seems like the NCAA + NIT + CBI is enough. I think in some recent years the CIT and/or the CBI had trouble getting enough teams to fill the originally projected number of team slots.

I’m hearing that unless a big donor steps up to cover the 80-100k required, playing in the CBI is not a reality. Since there is only a one-week window, there is no time to make a formal push to find a donor.

Maybe it's just best to let this sad little season quietly die. If the returning players didn't get better after 30+ games, an extra game or two and a few practices won't help much. Just to give the putrid world of sports talk radio the opportunity to debate the "*"? No thanks. If there's a willing donor, the university should direct the money to something more useful and beneficial in the long term.
