Word buzzing around the web is that tomorrow Patrick Baldwin, Jr. will declare his intention to play for his father at Milwaukee. If so, this is really huge. Baldwin is the #4 ranked player in the country per CBS 247 Sports, Rivals, and ESPN. Last summer Rivals had him at #2 in the country in the Class of '21. By way of contrast, Ray McCallum was generally ranked somewhere from 20-35 nationally. If it pans out, this is good news for all Horizon teams. www.kentucky.com/sports/college/kentucky-sports/uk-recruiting/article249280990.htmlIn today's virtual roundball breakfast, Coach Davis said the same thing. It would be great for the league to have Baldwin play for his father. Still no word from Baldwin. The Athletic says Duke remains optimistic.

Milwaukee assistant coach Paris Parham is expected to leave to take an assistant coach position with DePaul. Parham is a Chicago native and was previously a coach at Illinois.

Maybe he can join our coaching staff and bring his son along😁. Seriously, I'd expect him to become an assistant at a P5 School that makes him the best offer😉

We've had more than our share of those situations in the past decade haven't we? First we had the McCallums, which I'd say was a success. Then we had a couple of assistant coach pairings, with the Jacksons and the Chatmans. I think both of those were failures overall. Stats were decent for JJJ and good for Kam, but it seemed like both of them were just hoping to put up numbers on their way to someplace else. Now we have the Davis combo, which has generated some individual excitement and some notoriety, but hasn't translated yet into wins and losses. I'm a big fan of Antoine's. I really hope his senior year includes great team and individual success.

I forgot about that one, UP.
I think Coach Baldwin may be in line for a Power Five job somewhere as an assistant, even if he doesn't bring his son. He built a solid rep as an assistant at Northwestern. Of course, his son is the level of player that some teams hire a coach to get, but Baldwin is qualified on his own. If Patrick Jr. is a one and done, you've still added a solid piece to your staff in Patrick Sr.

While it's a close call, I'd say Milwaukee would be making a mistake to sack Baldwin. Milwaukee hasn't been very good under Baldwin -- 47-70 overall, 26-45 in conference. But they weren't very good before Baldwin-- 11-24, 4-14 in 1 season under LaValle Jordan, and 63-67, 29-37 in the last 4 years under Rob Jeter. They weren't awful last year: 10-12 overall, 7-10 in conference. As Sam notes, Baldwin was highly regarded as an assistant. Nobody wants to give anybody time to build a program anymore. And let's be honest--a year of Patrick Baldwin, Jr. (or perhaps two) could be very valuable in getting the program moving forward (it might also be nothing but a one-year blip, but either way it's pretty much all upside).
It's a tough call for an AD, and who knows what all details they might know, of which I have no idea. I don't think it's an obviously bad decision, but I'd be inclined to give Baldwin 1-2 more years.

Baldwin commits to Milwaukee. Good for Milwaukee, good for the HL.
