Further re FAU:
When Davis made his declaration, the Owls instantly questioned the credibility of a coach who took Indiana to the title game in 2002, his relationship with May be damned.
“Our guys are looking at me like, who is this guy?” May said.
‘‘What is this dude talking about?” recalled Giancarlo Rosado, sophomore forward. “Final Four? We ain’t no Final Four team right now. We’re far from that.”

Scoreboard for March 26, 2023. The Final Four is set.
San Diego State 57, Creighton 56. SDSU made a crucial error down the stretch that allowed the Jays to tie the game at 56, but Darrion Trammell hit a free throw with 1 second left to give the Aztecs the win. First Final Four for Smokey's old school. Also the first Final Four for a Mountain West team; UNLV was not in the Mountain West when they were rolling through the opposition back in the 80s and 90s.
Miami 88, Texas 81. Texas had a 10 point lead with with 8:30 to go, but it was fool's gold, built on some unusually hot shooting, including some very difficult shots. They cooled down and Miami kept going to the basket and racheted up the defense. During the Cane rally, Texas was really missing Dylan Disu, who had scored 17, 18, and 28 points in NCAA tournament games before getting hurt against Xavier.
San Diego State will face FAU. Miami will face UConn. I don't think anyone predicted that.

I think Utah was in the WAC that year.

I'm hearing rumors that certain SEC schools and conference representatives are pressuring the NCAA not to let Florida Atlantic and San Diego State play in the Final Four, since it's well known that their schedules weren't as difficult as SEC schedules, and it would cheapen the event.

Silly, but humorous. Commish is early for April Fools Day.

I think Utah was in the WAC that year. Yes, 1995, with Keith Van Horn as their stud. The current MWC wasn't formed until 1999, when most members of the original WAC broke away from the 16-team WAC to form the MWC. UTEP and Hawaii were the lone originals WAC team not to receive invitations to the MWC. Hawaii plays in the conference as an affiliate member for football only, invited back in 2010.

Scores for March 28, 2023. NIT Final Four!
North Texas 56, Wisconsin 54. Crazy game. Wisconsin was uncharacteristically hot in the first half, leading 41-29 at the break. But the Badgers only managed 13 points after the break. The Mean Green weren't exactly the 80s Running Rebels on offense in the second half, but they LOCKED down on defense. Wisconsin didn't score a single point the last 9:08 of the game! No field goals, no free throws...nothing. Ugly offensive game on both sides, but it was hotly contested. Both teams wanted to win.
UAB 88, Utah Valley 86 (OT). Nothing to see here, just an ovetime battle between a couple of good teams who each came in with 28 wins. Utah Valley had five players in double figures, and both Trey Woodbury and Aziz Bandaogo recorded double figures in rebounds as well. UAB forward Ty Brewer, who came in averaging 7 points per game, went wild with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Tonight's results mean that we'll have an all Conference USA NIT final on Thursday. Add in FAU in the Final Four and Charlotte winning the CBI, and it's been a good postseason for C-USA. Unfortunately for the conference, current members FAU, Charlotte, UAB, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA will be joining the American Athletic Conference next season.

Scores for March 30, 2023. NIT champ is crowned. North Texas 68, UAB 61. The Mean Green had a ten point lead at the half, but the Blazers fought back to take a brief lead. North Texas regained control and beat back a couple of UAB rallies to hold on for the win. It was an entertaining game that I enjoyed watching. I still get a kick out of the NIT. In my opinion, it's still a significant tournament and winning the championship is a big deal, especially for a program like North Texas. Congrats to the Mean Green.

What to watch for April 1, 2023. It's FINAL FOUR TIME! 6:00 PM CBS 9 seed Florida Atlantic vs 5 seed San Diego State. SD State favored by 2. 8:49 PM CBS 5 seed Miami vs 4 seed UConn. The Huskies are favored by 5.5, but could be missing one of their top scorers. It's been a wacky tournament. How wacky? Per Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook: Florida Atlantic was picked to finish 5th in Conference USA. San Diego State was ranked #25 in the country and picked first in the Mountain West. UConn was picked to finish 4th in the Big East. Miami was picked to finish 4th in the ACC. Blue Ribbon's picks for the best four teams in the country were Gonzaga, Houston, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Enjoy the games. I'm heading over to a sporting goods store to pick up a new Final Four t-shirt to wear while watching the games.

Scores for April 1, 2023. 73,860 fans were treated to a show at the Final Four.
San Diego State 72, Florida Atlantic 71. The dream came to an end for FAU, but it continues for San Diego State. The game had a wild start, with FAU taking a 5-0 lead only to watch the Aztecs go on a 14-0 run. The Owls fought back, carving up the normally tough Aztec defense, and had a 40-33 lead at the half. The lead grew to 14 in the second half, but San Diego State started chipping away. The scored was tied at 65 with 4:26 to go, but FAU went up three with a bucket with 47 seconds to go. San Diego State hit a jumper to make it 71-70 with 38 left, and they decided to play it out instead of foul. FAU drove to the basket and missed a shot with ten seconds left. The Aztecs got the rebound, decided not to call timeout, and Lamont Butler hit a midrange jumper at the buzzer to win it. Crushing loss for FAU, but a heck of a season. Detroiter Micah Parris had 6 points and 5 rebounds for SDSU.
UConn 72, Miami 59. This one was somewhat anticlimatic after the opener. The Hurricanes struggled offensively, hitting 32% from the floor for the game. Despite some health issues, the Huskies were more efficient and were never really threatened after taking a 13 point lead at the break. Nigel Pack and his $800,000 NIL deal only managed 8 points for Miami, while shooting just 3-10 from the floor. Detroiter Harlond Beverly scored 7 points in 11 minutes for the Hurricanes.
UConn and San Diego State will meet Monday night for the 2023 championship of college basketball. The Huskies are an early 7.5 point favorite. I'm rooting for Smokey's old school.
Go Aztecs!
