The Terriers have played basketball since the 1902 season. Its first team went 13-1, and St. Francis was considered a solid program for a long time. St. Francis played in the NIT in 1954, 1956, and 1963, when it was a major tournament. The '54 team went 23-4 in the regular season, then beat #20 Louisville before losing to #9 Holy Cross in the NIT. The 1956 team was 21-2 in the regular season and reached the NIT semi-finals. They also won the National Catholic Tournament in 1951, after being runners up in 1949 and 1950. But they never appeared in the NCAA tournament, and since 1963 have just one NIT appearance (2015) and one CIT appearance. Detroit played St. Francis twice, winning in both 1976 and 1977.
St. Francis is a small college--fewer than 2500 total students--with a small endowment--about $40 million. Obviously, they're having some real problems to take this step. Their president sudddenly asked for a leave of absence this spring and a board member stepped in as temporary president.
I always thought that "Terriers" was a good nickname, espeicially for a small school playing in big market.
