Problem child? Doesn't fit into new coach's plan? Coming home to Oakland or Detroit? We don't need him. He's basically the same player as Josh McFolley. My guess is that he's neither a problem child nor simply doesn't fit the plan (few new coaches want to immediately run off their best returning player), but had a connection with the old coach, that's gone, and he's got a valid reason to see if he can move up to high major level, or at least avoid playing on what are probably going to be a couple of very bad teams.

Jibri Blount is also leaving CSU. After a decent freshman season (5.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, .492 FG%) he declined last year (3.8, 2.2, .410). Still, he's over 15 minutes per game they'll have to pick up somewhere else.

Four of the top unsigned players in Ohio are Markell Johnson, Frankie Hughes, Tervell Beck, and Maishe Dailey. Johnson, a 6-0 pg, is a 4 star recruit with ESPN, Scout, and Rivals. He has offers from Florida, Cincinnati and many others. He's one of those guys (I still don't understand this) who had been class of '17, but is talking now about signing with Class of 16. Three weeks ago he announced (another thing I don't quite get, HS kids making such announcements) his final 5 as Ohio State, Louisville, NC State, Virginia Tech and Cleveland State, although this week he said he did not have a top 5 and was keeping all options open. He did take an unofficial visit to CSU last week. Frankie Hughes, a 6-5 sg, signed a letter of intent to play for Louisville last fall. Last week he was released from that LOI. In the fall he chose Louisville over Minnesota, Wisconsin, and St. Joe's. He has an offer from Cleveland State. Daily is a 6-6 sg who previously signed with Rutgers but was released from his LOI this month after the coaching change. Tervell Beck is a 3 star, 6-6 small forward. His final 5 are Pitt, UNLV, Dayton, Kent State, and Cleveland State. Northeast Ohio Recruits, an NCAA approved scouting service in Ohio, claims that the 4 have decided to attend the same school. What school keeps appearing on their lists? How many power conference schools still have 4 scholarships to be filled (like CSU does)? If Gary Waters can pull this off, CSU will be back in business in an instant. Well, Waters didn't pull this off, and now he's gone. Meanwhile: Frankie Hughes eventually chose Missouri, and averaged almost 20 minutes per game, scoring 20 or more points 3 times, including a season-high 24 against Xavier, and averaging 7.6. He is transferring, however, and recently tweeted "I miss Cleveland." As for the other three, Tervell Beck took a prep year and recently committed to UNLV. Daily is at Iowa, where he played just 92 minutes total as a freshman, and Markell Johnson ended up at NC State, and averaged over 20 minutes per game. NC State has a new coach, and there has been speculation that Johnson might leave the program, though he hasn't announced any such intention and the likelihood probably drops with each passing day. If I were CSU's new coach, I'd probably be all over Hughes, and then start tampering with Johnson and Daily ;-).

PG Gavin Peppers is transferring from Cleveland State to Central Michigan. Peppers played two years in juco and was expected to take over the point last year for CSU, but was injured shortly before the season began and missed the year. Now he has to sit a year before playing at CMU, meaning (I think) unless he gets a waiver, he'll have just 1 year to play for the Chips. Maybe I'm missing something--otherwise, why not play the year for CSU and try to leave as a grad transfer the following season? Maybe since he's got the associate's degree but didn't play at all last year he doesn't have to sit out a season. I don't know. But he's apparently gone from CSU.
Update, 5/5: Apparently Peppers is immediately eligible at CMU.

The Vikings pick up a nice piece for 2018-19 as former DePaul Blue Demon and Saginaw native Al Eichelberger enrolls at CSU.

Cleveland State lands another Detroit kid, picking up 2018 6-8 forward Spider Johnson from DEPSA. Haven't seen this kid play, so I don't know how good he might be. He has a good offer list on Verbal Commits. Just like Coach Waters, the new CSU coach is making the Detroit area a recruiting priority. verbalcommits.com/players/deante-johnson

Cleveland State landed an interesting commitment from Dibaji Walker, a 6-6 forward from Woodstock Academy. (I really hope their mascot is Snoopy's pal Woodstock.)
Walker is the son of former NBA player Samaki Walker and reportedly had offers from several mid majors, including Eastern Michigan and Sacred Heart.

Vikings won the first game on their Italian trip-- getting through customs (ba-dump). Actually, this afternoon they beat a team called the Italian All-Stars 85-63.
The Vikings broke it open with a 29-14 second quarter. From the box score, it appears that Cleveland State's front line dominated. Stefan Kenic had 17 points and 13 rebounds, juco transfer Jaalam Hill had 18 points and 8 rebounds, and our old friend Al Eichelberger started and had 13 points.

The Vikings won their second game in Italy, doubling up the Tuscany All-Stars (what ever that is) 101-50.
CSU again dominated the front line. Saginaw's Al Eichelberger--who ought to be a Titan--had 16 points and 6 rebounds. Another Michigander, freshman Seth Millner, had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

He should do very well in the HL. The year off might have helped him. Would have been nice to have him on the Titan roster last season when Hogan's career went off the rails.
