I tell you, it feels like DePaul basketball is cursed. Bad news came today when it was announced that junior forward Rashuan Stimage had suffered a broken foot during the team's scrimmage on Saturday and will miss 8-10 weeks. Obviously, this is a terrible blow for the Blue Demons. They are thin in the front court as it is, and Stimage was being counted on to provide the defensive and rebounding presence that the team has been lacking. It's also got to be devastating for Stimage personally. He's a JUCO player and Chicago native who was rated the top high school player in Chicago in 2012. Grades took him to the JUCO route and he has been looking forward to making an impact in his two years of D1 ball. Losing two months plus is a terrible turn of events for him. DePaul has a closed door scrimmage with Wisconsin this weekend. Coach Purnell is going to use it as a measuring stick for the Demons. They're a long way from Wisconsin as a program and as a current team, so hopefully they give a good effort and play well.

They're a long way from Wisconsin as a program and as a current team, so hopefully they give a good effort and play well. Per some online comments, Wisconsin beat up on DePaul in the first half of the scrimmage, but the Demons did much better in half number two. The Blue Demons were without Billy Garrett, Jr., and of course they played without Rashaun Stimage who had surgery recently for his broken foot. Dekker and Kaminsky reportedly looked really good for the Badgers. Aaron Simpson and Darrick Wood are said to have played well for DePaul. That's good news, particularly in the case of Wood who is battling a knee injury of his own.

Class of 2015 shooting guard Marlon Hunter, Jr. out of Tennessee stated that he will be announcing his college decision on Thursday. He lists DePaul among his final four along with East Tennessee, Northern Arizona, and UT-Martin. However, I don't think he's got that kind of offer from the Blue Demons at this time. 247sports.com/Player/Marlon-Hunter-35725

It's not often that October is a very important month for a college basketball program, but as we know, DePaul is in a precarious position. They desperately need to start winning more games, and a big part of that is increasing the talent level. They brought in some good players for 2014, but 2015 is just as crucial. So far in 2015, the Demons have pleasantly surprised fans by gaining commitments from two forwards from the DC area, which is an area where Coach Purnell has connections. Those players are Develle Phillips and Oumar Perry, who are AAU teammates. Both are rated as three star recruits. In October, the Blue Demons could be getting good news on some other recruits they have targeted. 1. Charles Thomas IV is a 6-7 forward from River Hill high school in Maryland. He played on the same AAU team as Phillps and Berry. Thomas has not shown up on the rankings for Scout, Rivals, or ESPN, but has received multiple offers and has a final list of DePaul, Wisconsin, and Rutgers. He plans to decide in a couple of weeks, per his coach. 2. Obinna Oleka is a 6-8 forward who is also a product of the DC AAU scene. Most recently he played at State College of Florida, a JUCO. He had previously committed to Texas, but was released from his NLI and is now sitting out a Cecil College and will be eligible in the class of 2015. Oleka is visiting DePaul this coming weekend, per reports. 3. Isaiah Moss is a 6-6 shooting guard small forward from Simeon High School in Chicago. He's a three star recruit who really had a good spring/summer AAU season. Per his coach, Moss is scheduled to visit DePaul this coming weekend. I believe DePaul would love to get two of these guys, but many would consider Moss the prize of the bunch. Coach Purnell is starting to thaw the "freeze out" he got from the Chicago area high school coaches when he arrived at DePaul, and getting a city kid like Moss would be a great sign of progress on that front. In the class of 2013 Depaul got Chicago kids Billy Garrett Jr, whose Dad is a DePaul assistant coach, and Thomas Hamilton IV, who had dropped in the rankings during the latter part of his high school years due to injuries and effort questions. Moss would be the first "on the rise" Chicago high school kid that Purnell got without there being a family connection. The DC AAU connections give hope that either Okeka or Thomas could choose DePaul. Moss is a late bloomer who has not been inundated with high major offers. The Demons have been working hard on him. If we get one of these players, I'd be happy. If we get two, that's an excellent class, especially for a coach firmly on the hot seat. Go Demons! Quick update on the Blue Demon October targets. 1. Charlie Thomas IV visited DePaul this past weekend, but committed to Wisconsin yesterday. Makes perfect sense, pretty much every way you look at it. I was surprised that DePaul was still in the running. 2. Obinna Oleka: Reportedly enjoyed his visit to DePaul, but has not yet made an decision. I have heard that there are some academic issues that need to be resolved. He remains a DePaul target; the Demons are losing two senior front court players after this year, and would like to add JUCO Oleka to join their two high school recruits for 2015 to shore up the front line. 3. Isaiah Moss: Had a good visit to DePaul from all accounts. Taking his time to make a decision, and now getting some heavy interest from Pittsburgh. Also, an addition: This coming weekend, 2015 shooting guard/small forward Marquez Letcher-Ellis is scheduled to visit DePaul. Ellis is a Houston, Texas native, who attends high school in Virginia and plays with the DC Premier AAU team. DePaul's first two commits for 2015 are also from DC Premier. Ellis is a three star player per ESPN, Rivals and Scout. Update on DePaul recruiting as the season we move into November. The Demons lost out on one of their priority recruits for 2015 when Isaiah Moss committed to Iowa. The Hawkeyes got in the mix late, but the attraction was enough to overshadow the efforts DePaul had put in on the kid. JUCO power forward Obinna Oleka is reportedly smoothing out his academic requirements. He remains a guy that DePaul is high on, but others are entering into the mix for him. DePaul reportedly backed off of Marquez Letcher-Ellis. He was scheduled to visit Depaul officially, but his visit was cancelled and I was told that was a decision that came from DePaul.

Sam,
Do you have a connection with DePaul? You send us all of this info on a program that hasn't had any national relevance since they booted Joey Meyer. They have been on the bottom of the Big East for as long as I can remember.
I do recall their glory days under Coach Ray Meyer when Aguirre played. Even before then, DePaul played Detroit in the late 70s with Dave Corzine. In my day (late 60s), we played DePaul when Joey meyer was on team.

Larry Larry, my connection with DePaul goes back to the late 70s when I was in high school and became a fan while Clyde "The Glide" Bradshaw, Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and that crew were starring for the Blue Demons. I was already a U of D fan, and felt a connection with another big city Catholic university. Plus, I loved the DePaul style of play. DePaul screwed up joining the Big East. That conference was not a good fit for them at the time. They were fine in Conference USA, but they lost a good coach in Dave Leitao right before they jumped into the Big East, and they have not recovered from that. I remain a fan, though, and there are some others on this board and the other who follow DePaul, so I keep the information coming. I try to get to Chicago for games when I can.

DePaul's 2014 class took a blow as forward Raymond Doby had academic issues and was not qualified. He plans to do a year of prep school and reclassify to 2015. This will actually be his second prep school. He transferred to a prep school for his senior year in high school, in part because of the "academics" of the prep school. Talk about a backfire. Doby didn't play as well as expected once he transferred for his senior year, so it remains to be seen if he will still garner some high major interest for the class of 2015. There was a bit of a surprise from DePaul yesterday when former 2014 signee Ray Doby signed his NLI with DePaul for the 2015 class. Apparently his academic house is in order, or the Demons are confident that he has made enough progress to be eligible. With open scholarships and a need for front court players, they brought Doby back on board. There is also a strategic element to Doby's recruitment. He is affiliated with the Mac Irvin Fire, one of the top AAU programs in the country. They are based in Chicago. DePaul has a couple of their guys on the roster now, and are in pursuit of others for 2015 and beyond. Doby helps keep that pipeline open.

The game wasn't at the Horizon. It was at DePaul's on campus arena. I'm a DePaul fan, and I'll continue to post here about them. Some others who lurk this board are interested in DePaul, too. However, it won't hurt my feelings if you ignore this thread. Not everyone shares the same interests. scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400588322

DePaul followed up what was perhaps their worst loss in recent years with what is perhaps their best victory yesterday when they beat Stanford 87-72. Junior Myke Henry, a transfer from Illinois, showed some of the promise that he had as a Top 100 high school player, putting up 29 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. The hope is that this gives the Demons something to build on. If they play like this, they are certainly capable of a winning record this season. For now, it's good that they are able to play a role in the conference's strong non-conference record. Next up for DePaul is Northern Illinois, on Tuesday night. espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400588350

DePaul beat Northern Illinois on Tuesday night 78-67, and followed that up with a 84-60 win over a pretty bad Chicago State team last night. I can't remember the last time DePaul won three straight games by double figures. CSU wasn't much of a test, but NIU is a good win and Stanford was a great win for the Blue Demon program. espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400588354
