For Oakland today, a big transfer pick up of Max Hooper from St. John's. Hooper did very little at St. John's and even less at Harvard (as a freshman). But because he's graduating in May in just 3 years, he'll be immediately eligible and still have 2 years of eligibility. He shot 40% from three point range, and showed real scoring pop at times - 18 points in the NIT loss to Robt. Morris (6-12 from three), 15 vs. Penn State, 13 points in 10 minutes (4-5 from three) against Georgetown. He fills Oakland's biggest need at shooting guard, and Kampe knows how to use 3 point shooters.

Travis Bader has signed with ASVEL Villeurbanne, a French team in Lyon. His contract includes an out should he get an NBA offer. This is one of France's better franchises, with 17 championships since 1949.

Oakland has lost backup guard Nick Daniels to a broken foot, the same one that kept him out last season. He's expected to be out for 8 weeks, i.e. until December. Also, backup center Artis Cleveland has been suspended "indefinitely" for "violation of team policies." Of course, a 5 week suspension will have him back for the season opener. We will see.

In addition to in state big man Brad Brechting, Oakland picked up a commit from guard Jaevin Cumberland out of Wilmington, OH. Two good pick ups for them. I think Cumberland is a marginal player at the Horizon/MAC type level, (sort of a role player, maybe 1 year starter) but he really fits OU's system and if there is a team that can use him, it may be Oakland. I think the young man made the right choice for his talents.

Brad B surprised me when he chose Oakland, especially early. I thought he might wait and see if he could get any more high major interest.

Well, I've not seen him play. But he is generally ranked on the fringe of the top 30 players in Ohio's class of 2015. He's a D-I player, for sure, but the Horizon may be just a bit of a stretch. I assume he's a smart kid given his offer from Army. He's a very different player than Williams or McFolley - he's a shooter, pure and simple. Said to be one of the best free throw shooters in the state. He's not a point guard, and he's a little short for a two guard, but not remarkably so. He is said to be undisciplined in shot selection, too slow to pass off, and so-so on "D".
I think OU is a perfect fit for him, from what I know. He seems to be exactly the type of player Kampe is able to develop and use effectively, and the Horizon seems at or near the top of his recruitment possibilities. McFolley seems like more the type of player Coach Ray works successfully with.
One other note - his cousin Jarron Cumberland, 3 inches taller and a year behind him at Wilmington, is considered a top 5 prospect in Ohio's class of '16, and a top 100 prospect nationally. Already has offers from Purdue & Butler, with Michigan sniffing around. Does this give OU an "in" there? That would really be the big catch.

Through 5 games, Kahlil Felder is averaging 41.6 minutes per game. Since there are only 40 minutes in a regulation game, that is quite a feat. We know of many teams that use a 3 guard lineup. But so weak is OU's depth at guard that Coach Kampe has begun using the rare 1 guard lineup - the last two games he has started Center Corey Petros and forwards Tommy McCune, Ralph Hill, and Femi Olujobi along with Felder. Max Hooper, who was to fill the Bader spot, has shot just 11 of 31 from 3 points (6 of those baskets coming in his one big game, against EMU), and can't play defense or rebound. Redshirt freshman Nick Daniels is out with a foot injury, the same one that kept him out all last season. They say he'll be ready in December, but they said that last year, too. Sophomore Collin Weaver is not yet eligible and freshman Alex Frascone simply isn't good enough and has played just 2 minutes in 5 games. Essentially McCune is acting as the two-guard.
If anything happens to Felder, this OU team could get really bad in a hurry. Fatigue alone will test him.
PS - Petros is averaging 39 minutes a game.
