Collin Weaver, one of the most mysterious players in the Horizon, is transferring from Oakland. Weaver is sometimes listed as being from Maine, but he attended a prep school in Arizona, apparently graduating in 2012, then appeared on the roster of the 2012-13 Scottsdale CC Artichokes. It does not appear he ever played there, and was listed on the roster as a redshirt. Later he enrolled in another Arizona prep school. He enrolled in Oakland University mid-year, in January 2014 and began play in the fall of 2014. During the 2014-15 season it seemed few could ever figure out if he had freshman or sophomore eligibility. Neither OU's own site nor any of the major indy sites (such as ESPN) lists a year of birth for him.
He appeared in just 17 games last year, averaging 1.7 ppg. Prediction: Oakland survives this loss.

Are you making up that "Artichokes" nickname?

Oakland caught a break this week, with word that Iowa State transfer Sherron Dorsey-Walker will be immediately eligible, according to a tweet from Coach Greg Kampe. I don't know the reason for this at all-- Dorsey-Walker played last fall semester at Iowa, and transferred to Oakland for spring semester. That means a 1 year (two semester) transfer break, i.e. he would become eligible at the end of fall semester in mid-December. I don't know what changed there, because that was what was announced without exception when he transferred, and no one was arguing that he could even put in for a hardship exemption. The case is remarkably similar to that of Keith Carter at Valpo, who had to sit out a full year, or Chris Jenkins, who had to sit a full year. In fact, it's quite a bit worse than the Jenkins case, since Jenkins never played for Colorado in the fall term, and left the school there early in the fall semester. But he still had to sit out a spring and fall.
In any case, it's a good break for OU. They would have had Dorsey-Walker for the conference portion of the season regardless, but this shortens his layoff time and allows him to play from the start of the season. My observation is that this is a significant advantage--it is very hard to work new players into the rotation in mid-season, both for the player involved, and for the rest of the team. Congrats to OU. I'd love to know the NCAA's reasoning.

Oakland leaves today for Spain. Two interesting notes: Martez Walker is traveling with the team, but has still not been cleared to play by the NCAA. I presume that is simply because he hasn't completed his transfer year, but I don't know. And Tommy McCune is staying home due to a team "rules violation." How many chances does he get?

Oakland won the first game of its Spanish trip, crushing Valencia Basket by about 40 points. Valencia is pretty good - it's a pro team in Spain's top league, where it reached the playoff semi-finals last year after a 20-14 regular season. It has three American players, the best known probably being former Northwestern player, and 2nd team all-Big 10 John Shurna.

Kampe is the coach so my guess is he gets as many as he wants or needs.

Spain is a wonderful country, with beautiful beaches, classic architecture, and ridiculously beautiful girls. I briefly dated one when I was in my late teens and she was stunning. She moved to my neighborhood when we were just small children and I had a crush on her from about the 3rd grade on. By the time I was 19 I'd worked up the courage to ask her out. And seeing as how she was a charitable soul, she said yes. As it turned out she was also crazier than a s***house rat (que sera sera) but that's another story. Anyway, why in the hell would Spain let Kampe into their country? Seems like a bad idea on any number of levels.

Indeed, I spent Thanksgiving 1978 with her in Valencia (only it's not Thanksgiving, there, of course, it's just a Thursday in November). And now I have to look at pictures of OU basketball players there in the home of El Cid.

How cool, Commish. It may be only a Thursday but it's a November Thursday in sunny Valencia with a young lady you married. That's a good deal all around.
Kampe in Valencia. Just sick to think about. El Cid must be tunneling out of his grave with such an obvious affront to good taste wandering his city.

Oakland pummelled Toulouges, a low-level French team, 105-68 last night.
Kampe is doing an interesting thing in having no practices in Spain. Lots of sight-seeing, and lots of posting it on social media. Seems like a good recruitment strategy.
