And Family is a big-time AAU program, perennially one of the best in Michigan. It's sad (to me at least) how much that type of connection now plays in selecting assistants. Seems like a solid choice though, with an OU pedigree. DePaul's two assistant coach hires this year were the head coach at La Lumiere and the coach of Mean Streets, one of the top AAU programs in the Midwest. Yeah, those kind of connections play more and more of a role in hiring.

Wow. That's a blow to a team that was hoping to make a national breakthrough this year. And a blow to the Horizon League, which keeps losing its best players early.

Yeah, as a college basketball fan whose team resides in the Horizon League, I'm sorry to see him go. As a fellow veteran, I felt a sense of pride watching him perform so well. I was expecting a big season from him.

Oakland gets a 2018 commit from Traveon Maddox. I believe Maddox was also considering playing football in college.

The feeling among GMU fans seems to be that Newman wasn't going to be in the top 7 in the rotation this year. He got in 15 minutes a game last year and played pretty well at times, but was still behind two sophs, Otis Livington and Michigander Jaire Grayer, and two other freshmen guards, Ian Boyd and Justin Kier, plus they added another guard in the 2017 class whom they are supposedly high on. Teams can't have official practices yet but the players do work out together in the summer. I would gather Newman and the coaches sat down and realistically appraised his future. By declaring now, before school starts, he avoids losing that extra semester like happened to Chris Jenkins a couple years ago.
There were a lot of pretty good, mid-major level guards in the Michigan Class of '16 -- Newman, Spencer Littleson, Brailen Neely, Kevin McKay. I was by no means sure the Titans got the best of the bunch when Corey Allen signed, but we did. Still, Newman is, I think, a good player who will contribute to OU. Presumably, after sitting this year he'll be in line to replace Kendrick Nunn at the #2 spot next year. Oakland's back-up #2 guard, Nick Daniels, also graduates after this year. So this nicely fills a need for Coach Kampe.

The Grizzlies are definitely trending up. Should be a big year for them.
