This is a fun game to listen to as I am driving around running errands. It's the Toledo radio broadcast, but their two man team is really solid and were very complimentary of Calihan Hall. Best of all, they are exclusively referring to us as Detroit. 🙂 Per the announcers, the Titans were intense and active, and the stats indicate that was the case. Sounds like the Titans were moving the ball and playing unselfish. Go Titans. If you watched it you would puke! Not sure what game Montgomery is watching but it’s not this one! Manciel and Lary should not be on the floor!!!!! Well, at the time I posted, it was a one point game at the half, so maybe I was premature in my praise. 😄

Our guys need to work on free throws and keeping their temper in check. Said it before the game, now I'll say it after the game. Our guys need to work on free throws and keeping their temper in check.

As to tempers, I thought our response to Toledo bullying us was at the appropriate level. What hurt is that we're young and still building and we didn't have the poise to channel our response into full-bore passion to win the game. It took away our focus and our energy.
These are learning steps. Last year we would have been down double-digits at halftime.

And I still ask what is the inside story re Tchikou and Hurst? I don't think it's anything mysterious this time around. U-D has had enough drama in the last 10 years. This is a new regime and we have a long way to go. No one is set in their position except maybe Mak and Lovejoy. It's a competition for PT in practice and court time has gotta be earned. Our ESPN+ team mentioned today that Mitchell earned his PT in practice and he looked OK out there today. We're a work in progress but we have some talent. I don't want anyone thinking they deserve to walk out there and play. I like that Coach plays different combos and doesn't just play a guy because of his name, or his past performance. One thing I noticed today is that our lack of ballhandling depth hurt us. For whatever reason Coach didn't play Gondrezick today, even when Lovejoy fouled out. At this early point we've just gotta trust the process and let the team come together through hard work and trial and error.

Things kind of fell apart in the 2nd half... the titans missed a few easy shots. Coach Montgomery has them playing hard and they don't quit.

And I still ask what is the inside story re Tchikou and Hurst? I noticed Hurst was walking with what looked like a tiny limp. I think a foot injury kept him out of the lineup for a lot of games last season. I'm guessing his zero minutes of playing time is related to injury.

And I still ask what is the inside story re Tchikou and Hurst? There is no inside story. Right now, other guys are outplaying them in practice. That could always change. But if you compare Tchikou's 2 minutes vs Niagara to Mitchell's 9 minutes today, you'll see why Miles moved ahead of him on the depth chart.

I treated my 3 grandsons to game today. The oldest is 6-4 and just made his freshman HS team. He was very into learning how each team defended. I also took him to several games last year. He was less than impressed with the team's play last year. He did appreciate the team's improvement in the game today. I also watched him walk next to a few Titans in the hall on their way to the locker room. I also was very impressed with the effort of everyone today knowing that they are all still learning. I expect this team to be "the team" nobody wants to play in the conference tourney. They should definitely play the spoiler role this year.

This team is still learning. Today, I expect, they learned a lot -- and I'd rather have them learn these lessons in a non-conference game.
It's hard to not be excited about freshman talent like Nadeau, Mitchell, and Johnson.

Coming into this season, I fully expected Tchikou to be in the starting line up and play lots of minuets. If he's not performing in practice or his conditioning is off, it's certainly understandable that's he's on the bench at game time.

I think we forget that Alex has only played one season of D1 hoops in the past 5 years. He was redshirted and injured at Alabama. He played one year at Rhode Island in 2022-23. He couldn't play last year here. Plus, he missed all the summer workouts to concentrate on his classes. Some players get up to speed more quickly than others. He looked way out of sync vs Niagara. He's big, but lacks experience.
