The Wolverines bounced back from the loss to CMU by CRUSHING Maryland, 81-46. Halftime score was 44-13. "Michigan Massacres Maryland" would be an appropriate headline.

Michigan with a chance to make a statement tonight when they host #1 Purdue. It's been a rough season for the Wolverines so far. The team has been inconsistent, losing to CMU one game and crushing Maryland the next. They've also been unlucky, if you subscribe to that sort of thing. Besides the bizarre loss to Arizona State (87-62) and the CMU debacle, the losses have been close and understandable. By 2 to Virginia, by four to Kentucky, by four to North Carolina, by six at Michigan State, by six at Maryland, and in OT at Iowa. Best win is probably that 31 point win at Pittsburgh. Current Michigan record is 11-8, 5-3 in the Big Ten.
Hunter Dickinson has been as expected, leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Kobe Buffkin is having a nice jump in production, averaging 12 points per game as a sophomore after averaging three ppg as a freshman. Speaking of freshmen, Dug McDaniel has shown some point guard promise and Jett Howard, Juwan's son, is scoring 14 per game and has shown star potential. He scored 34 at Iowa.
Purdue is favored by 5 tonight but Michigan can play very well at Chrysler. I think it will be a good game. Tip off is at 7:00 PM on FS1. If the Wolverines want to do more than squeak into the NCAA tourney like they did last year, even though they had a nice run to the Sweet Sixteen.

Freshman Jett Howard is leaving Michigan and declaring for the NBA draft. He is currently projected as a first round pick.

Surprise move: Michigan center Hunter Dickinson enters the portal.
It's worth noting that Hunter has been outspoken in the past about what he considers Michigan's relative lack of NIL opportunities.

The Wolverines add another one, as North Carolina guard Caleb Love commits to the Wolverines.
Love is capable of big games, but has always been an inconsistent shooter. His place in North Carolina lore is assured, due to his great play at big moments in the 2021-22 season.
Love averaged 17 ppg this past season, shooting 38% from the floor and just under 30% from three.

Recap:
In 2022-23 Michigan had their second straight disappointing season, but unlike 2021-22, there was no trip to the NCAA tournament Sweet Sixteen to end the season on a positive note. The Wolverines entered the NIT with a 17-15 record and beat Toledo at home before falling on the road to Vanderbilt in a game they seemed to have under control with less than a minute to go. UM was up 8 with 1:46 to go and didn't score again. Actually, that game was a microcosm of the entire season. Michigan lost several close games in the regular season, including three in overtime and eight others by 5 points or less. Win just four of those games and you're sitting at 21-11 at the end of the Big Ten tournament and probably going to the NCAA tournament instead of the NIT.
Injuries had a big impact on the Wolverines, with starting point guard Jae Llewellyn getting hurt in the eighth game and missing the rest of the season. Freshman Dug McDaniel got valuable experience at the point and showed potential, but he wasn't ready to carry the whole show. Jett Howard had some explosive games, but also had the freshman inconsistency. He also missed time with injury, sitting out five games.
After season's end, we saw Kobe Buffkin and Jett declare for the draft and Hunter Dickinson surprisingly hit the portal. So far, the Wolverines have added transfers from Alabama, Seton Hall, and North Carolina, with the former Tide and Pirate each transferring for the second time and supposedly needing waivers. The Wolverines also add a couple of four star freshman in the fall, center Papa Kante and shooting guard George Washington III.
The low point of the season was the two point loss to CMU. The high point was probably the win over Michigan State on February 18. Typical of today's sports fans, there has been quite a bit of "fire Juwan" talk on social media and the airwaves, despite a four year run that most programs would envy. Recently, there have been rumors that a few NBA teams have their eyes on Howard. We'll see what happens, but I expect a bounce back year for the Wolverines in 2023-24.

Papa Kante, Michigan's four star recruit, has asked for a release from his letter of intent. Kante is ranked near the bottom or just outside of the top 100 recruits in the class of 2023, depending on which service you read.

News just broke; no details available yet. Edit: No confirmation on the record, but according to some college basketball writers, Love did not have the academic credits to transfer to Michigan.

Michigan gets a major addition from the portal, signing Tennessee forward Oliver Nkamhoua. A native of Finland, Oliver averaged 11 points and 5 boards per game this past season for the Volunteers. Highlight of his season was a 27 point performance in an NCAA tournament victory over Duke. Welcome addition to the Wolverines, and since they officially announced it, I expect that they have accepted his credits. They don't want another Caleb Love situation, where the University rejects some of the player's credits. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4431832/olivier-nkamhoua
