On Steve Bell's "Dream Team."

On Steve Bell's "Dream Team." The commitment of Davis is getting slammed by the fans on the U of M basketball message board. The general consensus of fans is that after already getting a 2016 center in four star Jon Teske, there was no need to get Davis, who hadn't really gotten any high major offers and minimal interest overall. The Wolverines fans would rather that scholarship had gone to a guard, or a big man with better ratings than Davis. I can understand that; I've seen nothing that made me think Davis was on the level of an early offer/commit to a Big Ten school. Someone in the thread makes the comparison between Michigan getting Davis right after Michigan State gets 5 star center Caleb Swanigan. forum.umhoops.com/discussion/2159/austin-davis-commits-to-michigan

Hmm. I think the "minimal interest" is just wrong. Davis had interest from virtually every Big 10 team (including Iowa, Purdue, MSU, Wisconsin - basically the upper half of this year's league standings except for Ohio State) and Notre Dame, had offers already from George Washington and about half the MAC. 6-10, 250 lb., awesome HS stats. I wouldn't be upset with my coach for getting the early commitment. I think there is almost no way he would not have ended up high major. He's a stud, or he's a bench player (you need those, too), or worst case he washes out after a year. Seems like if you can lock up a guy like that early, go for it.

I'm basically reporting what I read on the board, and going by the limited interest in him I saw from high majors prior to yesterday. I know he is listed as having "interest" from some Big Ten teams and Notre Dame, but I never know what that means. I wonder: Did they send him a letter? Did someone scout him at a tournament? Seems like if he was a lock high major, with his size he would have had an offer from Northwestern, Butler, Cincy, someone like that, by now. No high major offers at this point would seem to be a negative. I've never seen him play, though, and perhaps he was about to blow up and JB swooped in and got him before the rush started. I read that JB made the offer on the phone and the kid committed about an hour later. :-)

Prep Hoops Michigan at the start of this year had him ranked #2 in the Class of '16, after Winston. Of course, several of the best players in that class have abandoned the state. Steve Schwanda also had him ranked #2 after Winston. Steve Bell hasn't ranked the class of 16 in over a year, but at that time he had Davis 4th, behind the now departed Josh Jackson and Al Eichelberger (#1 & #3) and Winston (#2). Prep spotlight had him at #3 in December 2013, behind Jackson and Winston, ahead of Al Eich.

Tyus Battle committed to Syracuse today. That's a great pick up for the Orange, especially considering their NCAA issues. Bitter loss for Michigan.

Michigan released their non-conference schedule, and it's not as strong as I thought it would be. Their best home game is against Xavier. They travel to NC State and SMU. They have three games in a November tourney in the Bahamas. All in all, not a strong schedule, especially the home games. www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/mich-m-baskbl-sched.html

Two tough true road games, Xavier at home, 2-3 tough games in the Bahamas. The bottom of the schedule is pretty crap though.

Last year they had Syracuse and SMU at home, this year the only home game of note is Xavier and that is an obligation due to the Big Ten/Big East Gavitt Games. Seems like a significant step down from the previous year.
