Akron and Northern Illinois will also join the MVC for soccer. Chicago St. (affiliate in the MAC for soccer) reportedly will be an independent. Bowling Green, strongest of the MAC programs and currently nationally ranked, is looking to affiliate with an “elite” conference for that sport. All the MAC schools offer women’s soccer.

Here's an interesting read about San Diego State and the Mountain West conference. SDSU sent a letter to the MWC, stating their intention to leave the league. That generally triggers penalties, withholding of payments, etc. San Diego State, however, asked the conference for a month extension at the same time they notified the league of their intention to leave; unusual, to say the least. San Diego State is trying to walk the tightrope between announcing their departure at an advantageous time and minimizing the financial payout they will owe the league. Apparently, does not hold an official/public offer from one of the Power Five conferences; it appears that some things are in limbo while the PAC 12 works out it's latest media deal. I'm amused when schools decide to leave their current conference, but then want the conference to bend the exit rules for them to make their departure easy. Why would any league want to do that? www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/37864747/sources-san-diego-st-tells-mountain-west-plans-exit

The Horizon caved to UIC. Remember how UIC turned the conversation 180 degrees when their contract clearly stated their teams would be ineligible for post-season Horizon Tourneys if they broke the contract and gave short notice, which is exactly what they did. So UIC Administration put the blame on the Horizon (instead of admitting their own greed and accepting that they were screwing their OWN student-athletes). They were able to push a PR campaign that made the Horizon look bad, and it worked. So the League backed down. Add UIC to my list of schools I hope never succeed in anything.

I remember that UIC situation. They totally blew it. And the "experts" in the Twitterverse did a poor job of actually reporting the situation, framing it as "those poor UIC student/athletes are being denied a chance at the conference tournament by the mean old league office" instead of presenting it as the truth; a simple story of an organization holding its members to the rules. UIC was at fault, but they got a pass from the press.

Looks like the PAC 12 didn't come with an official invitation to join. The article also describes a scenario where the PAC 12 could be "decimated" by expansion plans in other conferences. That would be a real shame for the fans out there who are big on tradition, including me. Beyond that, I don't think that it's good for college sports overall for there to only be 2-3 "super" conferences. www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/aztecs-staying-in-mountain-west-conference-instead-of-leaving-for-pac-12-for-now/3256396/

I sort of admire the MWC for its self-respect--"no, we won't automatically take you back." But you're right, this makes no sense for them to stand too tough. And if SD State tries to leave a third time, I think the equities would strongly support them getting the full exit fee if SD State forces them to court to collect. Anyway it all reminds me of JJ Jackson:
