The choice of which school to attend is a critical one for recruits, especially for JUCO players. A wrong decision can throw your whole playing career out of wack. A case in point is Mychal Mulder, currently at Kentucky. Mulder was one of the top guards in the JUCO class of 2015. He reportedly had offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Mississippi State, and others. Late in the recruiting season, Spring of 2015. Kentucky found themselves losing out on a couple of guard prospects and made an offer to Mulder. He jumped on it and committed almost immediately, with this quote:
"(Calipari) told me there is an opportunity there for me and it's my choice to grab it. That's all I ever wanted," Mulder said. "It was a tough decision for me. A lot of great people recruited me. I just thought at the end of the day, Kentucky, playing there was probably my best chance of continuing my career after college. I hope to play professionally one day, and I felt like that would probably be my best opportunity."
Fast forward to now, as the season nears it's end. Mulder has played a total of 79 minutes, with a total of 12 points. After he signed with Kentucky, Coach Cal recruited right over him, taking a five star guard in the class of 2015, Jamal Murray, and adding another 2015 guard, four star Charles Matthews. Mychal can't crack that rotation, and with Kentucky already signing a five star shooting guard in the class of 2016, it looks like next year will be no better. Tough choice for Mulder going forward. Does he ask for his release and hope to find a program willing to give him two years of scholarship for a year of play, or does he stick it out at Kentucky, try to crack the rotation, and enjoy the lifestyle that comes with being on the basketball team at an elite program? Granted, neither of those options is a bad one, as you're getting a free education.
Tough call. Kentucky isn't for everyone.

In one respect, yes, if you can get it done at Kentucky, it's your best chance to continue on, maybe even NBA. But sitting on the bench doesn't do it for you. He goes to Mississippi State or something, maybe he's a starter averagine 12 points a game. Lot better odds of moving on. These are tough calls for young men to make. But I suspect good advice is always that if someone higher in the pecking order comes in at the last minute, you can figure you're not their first choice, and you should be wary.

Another example popped up today when Minnesota senior guard Carlos Morris (a former Titan recruit) was dismissed from the Golden Gophers. Morris was a JUCO in the class of 2014 who had some good offers. Minnesota looked like a smart destination for him; they had been in the post season multiple times in recent years and were coming off of an NIT championship with the "hot young coach" Richard Pitino at the helm. Of course, the Gophers regressed last year, not making any post season tourney, but Morris had a solid statistical season. This year they have just been abysmal, sitting at 0-13 in conference. Carlos's numbers were down this year and unfortunately had has been made the scapegoat for the team's poor season by a lot of fans. Morris is still on scholarship and receiving academic support, so hopefully he graduates on time. Unfortunately, there's no Senior Day for him and his career is cut short.
Just goes to show, sometimes even when a recruit makes what looks like a solid choice, it doesn't work out.

Most hypocritical tweet I've seen in awhile: Rick Lewis @coach_Rick57 10m10 minutes ago Statesville, NC Amazed how many players feel the urge to send mass text messages to everyone concerning their recruitment. LOL This guy, Rick Lewis, constantly tweets out all kinds of mundane recruiting information about prospects. He re-tweeted a post from some minor guy who was expressing thanks for his offer from Pfieffer. He also made a big deal about a guy getting an offer from Worfford. And he wonders why the players send out mass texts regarding their recruitment?

Yeah, it's getting out of control. A 2017 recruit announced today that on August 17 he will be announcing...wait for it...his TOP SEVEN schools. True story.
I think all of the announcements and list cutting is a little silly (especially when kids "cut" their list to a number more than ten) but it's basically harmless. If I was a top high school player today, I can't for sure I wouldn't be doing the same thing.

Our own Rashad Phillips had some interesting comments about today's recruiting.
Rashad Phillips @rp3natural 1m1 minute ago Guards have it rough we have to score, think quick, pass, defend, be skillful, shoot, handle the ball, be a certain height etc...
Rashad Phillips @rp3natural 33s34 seconds ago Big guys have it easier. Rebound, chew gum, walk, set screens and they get D1 offers and big contracts in the pros.

Virginia Tech got three verbal commits in one day. Just getting three commits in one day is rare, but what makes this even more unusual is that all three players are from the class of...2019. Got the feeling that not all of those commitments are going to stick. All three kids are sophomores. Who's to say they will all three be ACC good by the time 2019 rolls around? And do we think that 15 year old kids won't change their minds in the next two years? www.scout.com/college/virginia-tech/story/1709803-2019-trio-commits-vt

Can you really count on a kid in the first month of his sophomore year to not change in mind over the next two or three years? Put this one down in pencil. Pat Lawless @patlawless_ 22m22 minutes ago Jared Jones, a class of 2019 PF from Pebblebrook HS (GA), just verbally committed to Auburn.

In today's journalism, there is always the desire to get the information out there first, whether it's accurate or not. Both of these tweets hit at the same time. Someone made a mistake.
Corey Evans @coreyevans_10 1m1 minute ago Ross Township, PA 2017 Victory Rock big man Mayan Kiir has committed to VCU, per source
Evan Daniels @evandaniels 2m2 minutes ago 2017 forward Mayan Kiir just committed to Vanderbilt, per coach Loren Jackson.

I've always felt for Mychal Mulder, mostly because I watched his recruitment closely and I knew he was just going to be used as practice fodder when he signed with Kentucky. He finally got some playing time last night, thanks for the Wildcat 33 point win over Duquesne. He scored 13 points in twenty minutes, leading to this inaccurate (Mulder was 3-8 from three, not 5-8) and overly optimistic tweet from Jon Rothstein. Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 4h4 hours ago Mychal Mulder scored 13 points in 20 mins Sunday against Duquesne. Went 5-8 from 3-pt range. Could be key piece down road for Kentucky. #BBN
