Ted McCree of Detroit Renaissance is heading to a prep school in Arizona. McCree has not been highly recruited. I wonder if he or someone close to him is convinced that the reason he's not getting recruited is because he's stuck in the anonymity of Detroit Renaissance High School and the PSL. Is he going to the prep school where the old Country Day coach is working?

Eric Davis is reportedly making his decision tomorrow. Not a bad offer list for a kid who stayed in Michigan rather than going prep. :-)
I have heard different things from Saginaw about his destination. Some say UNLV, others say NC State. I think they're all guessing, though.

I think some of the "prep school" rage is just fear. Parents as much as kids are thinking, "if little Michael ends up like James Young, he earns millions before he's 25 years old. If he ends up like Kenny Goins" - that is to say, better than 99% of the basketball players in America- "he's merely a walk on at MSU. Suppose the prep school guy is right? What if they can move him from A to B? What if going to prep school is he difference? What if it just might be the difference?" And they're scared - they may not really be convinced that their kid needs to go to Outta State Prep, but what if they're wrong? They don't want their kid to miss the chance of a lifetime.
A first round NBA pick may earn $20 million from basketball. A good player like Kendrick Perry may eeke out a reasonably comfortable living in far off places. if going "prep" increases the odds of the former by 1%, thats worth a $200,000 investment in prep school. Although few if any would calculate it like this, some more general calculation along these lines is occurring in the back of their minds. And under the sales pitch, they (kids and parents) are probably vastly overestimating the odds of making the NBA if they go the prep route.
It continues when they pick the college. As a result, they are passing up better fits, places they'd be happier and play more. Lets say you're a really bright kid, and also really good- say Kenny Goins good. Are you really better walking on at MSU, or getting a scholarship to an elite academic school like maybe Davidson or a Patriot or Ivy team, or a good Jesuit school like UD? You'll probably get a higher lifetime return from the latter degree.
But giving up the dream is very tough.

That's an interesting perspective, Commish. I'm sure there's a lot of truth there.
Choosing the wrong path can cost a player years. It's a tough call for the kid and parents. You have to make sure you're getting good advice and not being drawn in by a slick sales pitch.
FYI, Eric Davis to Texas.

Update on Josh Jackson from a couple of weeks back. I didn't realize that the guys who started Prolific Prep were pushed towards the idea by Jackson's mother. Also, this article says he averaged 38 points and 15 rebounds during a recent weekend. Jackson's mom said that the big numbers he put up at Consortium were a sign he needed to play tougher competition. So, what does his recent performance indicate? Interesting: There is no mention at all in this article of Al Eichelberger. usatodayhss.com/2014/detroiter-josh-jackson-still-coveted-basketball-recruit

I guess I am old fashioned, too, because that sounds like a terrible idea. I wonder about the impact on academics, especially since the players for prolific prep reportedly attend different high schools in the area. Are their actual schools aware of their basketball travel schedule, and will those absences impact their grades? On a school team, at least the teachers are aware of what the team is doing, and they can make allowances with things like due dates and other accommodations, but will a teacher do the same for a team that has no connection to the school? I don't know.
I know it's a different world, but one thing I loved about playing high school ball was playing with guys I had grown up with. We weren't all strangers thrown together to fill out a roster. Team work was important, and so was winning those games. I can't imagine the basketball factory experience being as fulfilling. Then again, they won't miss what they never had.

To your point, Jackson and the Prolific Prep team is in Las Vegas this week playing in the Tark Classic, while classes are going on at whatever area school he is attending in Northern California.

Why should there be any school spirit? It's not really a school. It's a basketball club and they attend some other school for classes. Another thing the kids lose.
