Yes, because so far only 9 Michigan high school kids in the class of 2018 have signed with Big 10 programs. Armstrong has been terribly mishandled. He's hardly played high school ball because he keeps transferring (leaving the state once before) and didn't play in very competitive AAU team. He's still a top recruit but I sense his stock is dropping. This may be an effort to boost it back up, but maybe what he really needs to do is stay put and play. Terry Armstrong, who was a high major recruit before he started hopping all over the country and missing basketball seasons, committed to Arizona. His stock has fallen in terms of his national ranking, but impressed enough people to land in the Pac 12.

Just read that Harlond Beverly is going to prep at Montverde Academy. Apparently the offers from Louisville and Xavier, along with visits to both, aren't satisfactory for whoever is making decisions on the kid's future. Beverly commits to Miami

Not really leaving the State for high school but for prep school - Carpenter turns a year of prep school into a Bona commit

Terry Armstrong will not enroll at Arizona, and instead will be looking for professional opportunities. Reports are that Armstrong was not academically eligible for admittance to Arizona, as his school hopping left a pretty ragged transcript.

This whole article basically affirms that the prep school route is actually a way to just play basketball more than being a high school student. I suppose thats fine if everyone acknowledged that's what it was and not actually a high school and academic 'normal' experience for the kids. Afterall, other sports have avenues to do this like minor league hockey and baseball. The pretense of these places offering academic value is clearly a load of junk, especially slammed by the article noting most of the classes are online. Also helps understand why kids doing these paths more and more seem to have trouble qualifying with NCAA to be academically eligible.

Also helps understand why kids doing these paths more and more seem to have trouble qualifying with NCAA to be academically eligible. Great points, TTH. These articles almost always focus on the what they consider to be the shortcomings of the MHSAA, and promote the narrative that if some of their rules were relaxed, players wouldn't be leaving the state. I think that's false. I think the basketball factory move has become the "cool" thing to do, and they do a good job of marketing themselves as a great way to get to the NBA, even when the data doesn't indicate that. These articles almost never mention the players who fell off the radar after going the prep school route (Billy Thomas of UDJ) or simply failed to develop as players (Al Eichelberger). Terry Armstrong apparently jumped around from public school to prep school to another public school so much that it had a negative effect on his academics. Players have to realize, a lot of these "schools" are just trying to player eligible for the season. They aren't worried about what a player will do once his eligibility is used up. Wendell Green is a currently an interesting example of a Michigan kid who moved out of State. Two years ago he was at Country Day and had multiple mid major offers and was garnering interest from the high majors. He was pegged as a future Mr. Basketball favorite. He decided to move to Indiana to attend La Lumiere, but his recruitment hasn't really taken off. He recently took an official visit to Eastern Kentucky. He probably would have gotten that offer staying at Country Day. La Lumiere is a solid academic institution, so he's probably fine in that area. As I have said a million times, there are seven D1 programs in Michigan. If you can play, you will be discovered. Going out of state to get "EXPOSURE" doesn't really make sense if you're in Michigan. Cassius Winston wasn't hurt by staying in Michigan. State championship while playing in front of family and friends. Four star/top 100 rating. Full ride to Michigan State. Two Big Ten championships. Final Four appearance. All American. Big Ten Player of the Year. Oh, yeah, and he graduated with a bachelor's degree in three years in East Lansing. Not bad for a kid who stayed in the Mitten State. And Jalen Terry of Flint Beecher might be following that path.

Wendell Green, Jr., class of 2020 guard from Country Day, is transferring to La Lumiere in Indiana. Wendell Green, Jr. announced his commitment today to...Eastern Kentucky. At the time he left Country Day for La Lumiere, he stated that he had offers from Oakland, EMU, and Detroit, and coaches from Mississippi were planning a trip to LL to see him. (I think he meant Ole Miss.) This article states that his decision came down to EKU and DePaul, which I think are the only official trips he took. I'm skeptical that DePaul really had a "if you say yes we'll take you right now" offer out to him. Talking to some people I know, I got the feeling that the official visit to Chicago was a favor from the assistant coach on the DePaul staff who used to be the head coach at LL. 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Wendell-Green-Eastern-Kentucky-basketball-commitment-136769032/

Had a solid season at EKU and then transferred to Auburn, where he averaged about 13 ppg over two seasons. He was a volume shooter, hitting less than 37% overall and less than 30% from three in his last season as a Tiger before declaring from the draft. He went undrafted, but played Summer League ball for the Cleveland Cavs.

Daris Acuff, a five star recruit in the class of 2025 from Cass Tech, has announced that he will be playing next season at IMG Academy in Florida. Guess he's looking for more exposure to raise his recruiting profile.
Right now he has offeres from Michigan State, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Kansas, and a bunch of other high majors.

That's too bad we couldn't keep him in MI. He has really blown up this summer on the AAU circuit thus all those big name offers he's now sporting.
