Went to the EMU/Toledo game last night and enjoyed something I haven't witnessed at Calihan the past two years. Two talented teams playing good basketball in a competitive contest. The Eagles took the win 85-79, overcoming an early twelve point deficit. It was a fun time at the Convocation Center. My work schedule has resulted in me being free on more EMU game nights than Titan game nights, but I have had a good time at EMU this season. EMU reminds me of some recent Titan teams that sometimes seem to play below their capabilities, but when these Eagles are on their game they are tough to beat. This was win number five in the past six games. emueagles.com/news/2018/2/20/mens-basketball-emus-second-half-surge-takes-down-toledo-85-79.aspx

I just couldn't justify doing it this year. I attended the Wayne State vs. Northwood game this past Saturday, both teams played discipline basketball, I didn't see a player on either team dribble the ball up the court and launch a 35 five footer, something that is done by either Chatman or Jjjr. on a regular basis. Neither team is super talented, but they follow their coaches instructions. David Greer is excellent with the X's and O's, however, he seems to have that Don Chaney/Bob Knight type of personality, which I don't think would work well recruiting players at the D1 level. I remember reading Greers bio when he was at UDM, it stated that he was responsible for recruiting Indiana, Ohio and the JUCO's. I can honestly state that I don't remember getting a player from Indiana or Ohio during the Greer era. I could be wrong but the only player I can remember being from Ohio in the past 15 years is Theron Washington.

I've missed very few Titan home games over the past several years, so this year is a real aberration. Had my work schedule been different, I think I would have attended more games, but who knows? This losing has been depressing. Not sure I would feel like experiencing all that in person.

On Saturday, EMU celebrated Senior Day during their regular season home finale. The Eagles came out on top in a blowout, 82-53. The game was part of a double header with the women's team (Men's game at noon, women's game at 2:30), but unfortunately announced attendance was only 1821. EMU had one of their best offensive performances, shooting 55% from the floor, 41% from three, and 88% from the free throw line. They committed only 10 turnovers. EMU has won seven out of their last nine, including four in a row, and now sit at 18-11 and 9-7. In addition to going out with a win, senior Tim Bond put together a memorable senior night. He scored 11 points, had 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and three steals. He broke the 1,000 career point barrier and took over the number one spot in career steals in EMU history, breaking the record held by Earl Boykins. I follow EMU closely (the first college basketball game I ever attended was EMU vs WMU at Bowen Fieldhouse) and as the years have gone on I compare their program with the Titan program, in things like record, recruiting, head to head competition, attendance, etc. As a Titan grad, it is disheartening to see the gap in the current status of the programs. EMU has 18 wins this season, with two more regular season games. The Titans have completed their regular season, and have totaled 16 wins the past two years. As Commish noted in the scoreboard, EMU loses only one player to graduation after the season. (However, 6-9 forward Elijah Minnie is a redshirt junior, and I wouldn't be surprised if a high major poaches him.) They will add 6-11, 240, Grand Canyon transfer Boubacar Toure to the lineup. Next season should be interesting, and I am sure that Moose and I will be in attendance for a game or two at the Convocation Center. www.emueagles.com/news/2018/2/24/mens-basketball-emu-hoops-routs-niu-on-senior-day-82-53.aspx

In my undergrad days at U-D, EMU was in the NCAA small college category. This was before the realignment to Div 1, 2 and 3. Their nickname was the Hurons. We beat them 107-78 in 1968 at home. In 1969, we played at YPSI and escaped with a 74-72 victory. That was the Spencer Haywood team and we were undefeated at the time, although it was early in the season.

Correction...EMU was a member of the NAIA at that time and coached by Jim Ducher. Highly successful, he had a 122-49 record from 1966-72 and later coached at Minnesota AABA. His son, Brian Dutcher has also coached collegiate lay and professionally.

Thanks for sharing. That game at Ypsi must have been a fun watch.

Correction #2. Dad Jim is from Alpena, MI....was head coach at Alpena CC prior to EMU and Univ of Minnesota thereafter. Son Brian was an assistant at U-M..then followed Steve Fischer to SD State and was appointed head coach in 2017.

Eastern with a good road win at WMU to move to 19-11 and secure a first round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. The regular season finale is in Toledo on Friday. So the Eagles will try to get that 20th win, but the Rockets will be looking for payback. Might have been a good game for a road trip if I had the time. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=400990284
