There are more than a few Titan fans who feel a sense of kinship with our Catholic brethren in the Big East, and others such as myself who are long time fans of the programs. We can use this thread for relevant topics and commentary on the conference.
Many of the ESPN talking heads are writing off the Big East, but I think part of that is sour grapes because the Big East went with Fox for it's TV contract. While the Big East is not on the level of the ACC or the old Big East itself, this basketball only version is going to be good for the member schools. They've got a nice TV deal and a unified mission with basketball as the focus. They won't have the football money, but they also won't be solely driven by the football powers at the expense of hoops. It will be interesting to see how the conference does moving forward.

As the "new" Big East prepares for it's second year, lots of questions remain. Will Marquette, St. John's, and Georgetown bounce back? Is Providence's influx of talent going to pay off in another NCAA tournament bid? Will Creighton remain a threat despite the loss of McDermott? Will Xavier remain a first division team? Will DePaul ever escape the cellar?
The Sporting News predicts the Big East this way for 2014-15.
1. Villanova 2. Georgetown 3. Xavier 4. Providence 5. Butler 6. St. John's 7. Marquette 8. Seton Hall 9. Creighton 10. DePaul

Nova got a huge commit today when five star guard Jalen Brunson (who was heavily recruited by Illinois and Michigan State) committed to the Wildcats. He's a consensus Top 50 player in the country; some have him ranked in the top twenty.

Providence is not yet feeling any negative impact on recruiting from the "new" Big East. Coach Ed Cooley is following up their strong 2014 class with a very good start for 2015. They have verbal commitments from power forward Alex Owens, power forward Ryan Fazekas, and guard Drew Edwards. All are rated four star recruits on ESPN, and Owens is rated in the top 100.
Cooley is doing a heck of a job at Providence.

Athlon's Sports Big East Prediction for 2014-15:
1. Villanova 2. Georgetown 3. Xavier 4. St. John's 5. Providence 6. Seton Hall 7. Butler 8. Marquette 9. Creighton 10. DePaul
Nova's consistently being picked at the top of the league by the prognosticators. Georgetown is expected to bounce back from a bad 2013-14. DePaul is being picked to finish in the basement again. Other than those, there is a lot of uncertainty about the Big East.

DePaul's decline to irrelevance is really remarkable. I'm beginning to wonder if they can turn it around, or if they are doomed to join the ranks of Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, and, well, maybe we could add Detroit - former powers that few think about any more.

I'm beginning to wonder if they can turn it around, or if they are doomed to join the ranks of Duquesne, St. Bonaventure, and, well, maybe we could add Detroit - former powers that few think about any more. Commish, I remain hopeful, but I am less confident than I used to be that DePaul can get turned around. I thought Oliver Purnell was a good choice, given his success in turning around programs at Dayton, Clemson, Radford, and Old Dominion. It has not worked out for him, however. I really thought they'd see an improvement last year, after the re-org of the conference and Purnell landing a couple of well regarded Chicago kids. Didn't quite work out that way. I think Purnell would have had more success had he not been frozen out by Chicago area high school coaches when he was hired; apparently they wanted one of their own to get the DePaul job. Now, I don't know if he can recover and a new coach means another four or five year plan.
