A few interesting observations about Marquette from Jon Rothstein:
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 6m6 minutes ago It won't be this season, but Marquette's Luke Fischer will eventually develop into one of the best big men in the Big East. 6-11 + skilled.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 4m4 minutes ago Marquette won't have a player on its roster taller than 6-7 until Luke Fischer is eligible. Undersized team for first eight games of 14-15.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 3m3 minutes ago Early prediction on Marquette's initial starting five --- Derrick Wilson, Matt Carlino, Jajuan Johnson, Deonte Burton, Steve Taylor...
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 1m1 minute ago Marquette needs multiple players to have breakout seasons to be a surprise Big East team. Likeliest candidates --- Johnson, Burton, Taylor.
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 18s19 seconds ago Expect Matt Carlino to potentially challenge D'Angelo Harrison as one of the top scorers in the Big East. Should put up gaudy numbers.

Marquette got a big piece of the future today when five star forward Henry Ellenson verbally committed to the Golden Eagles. (I still want to call them the Warriors.) Ellenson is a consensus top ten player in the class of 2015, rated in the top five by some. This is a great for their program, and another big recruiting success for Wojo. Ellenson is the fourth top 100 pickup for Marquette in this class. This is also another counter to the arguments that it will be tough for the coaches in the "new" Big East to recruit to the conference. Some cited that as a factor in Buzz Williams leaving Marquette. Interesting note about Big East recruiting this year. It's worth noting that Big East schools are still in the mix for several other Top 100 players.
Mark Miller @wisbbyearbook 1h1 hour ago Marquette commit Henry Ellenson of Rice Lake is the 8th player from 247 Sports Composite Top 100 rankings to commit to a Big East school.

Here's an interesting article about the importance of St. John's 2015 class. They have six seniors on the roster and could lose a couple of more. Steve Lavin's seat is warm and he needs to win this year and bring in some talent for the future. They've got a big recruiting weekend planned. zagsblog.com/articles/critical-recruiting-weekend-on-tap-for-st-johns/

Adam Zagoria weighs in on the Big East, and includes some observations by East Coast basketball guys on the conference. He predicts an order of finish and an all conference team. Note: I hate when someone picks an All State, Conference, etc. team and puts more than five guys on it. How do you have a six member first team All Conference list? zagsblog.com/articles/big-pressure-on-the-big-east-preseason-poll-first-team-picks/1. Villanova 2. Georgetown 3. St John's 4. Xavier 5. Providence 6. Seton Hall 7. Marquette 8. Creighton 9. Butler 10. DePaul

In terms of conference strength, I am reading that the Big East came in Number Five in the Ken Pom ratings. Here's the link: I haven't double checked to see if that No. 5 statement is accurate, however. kenpom.com/index.php

St. John's takes a hit. Forward Keith Thomas has been ruled ineligible this year. This would have been his first year of D1 ball after playing last year at Westchester Community College. He averaged a whopping 16 rebounds and 15 points per game at WCC, but it has recently come to light that WCC was passing out fraudulent transcripts. There are allegations of serious academic fraud. As the allegations became public, St. John's conducted another review of Thomas's records and ruled him ineligible. They're not taking any chances. This is the second time this week a Big East team has lost a talented JUCO forward. Rashaun Stimage of DePaul was hurt during the team's scrimmage on Saturday and will miss about two months. espn.go.com/blog/new-york/colleges/post/_/id/7406/st-johns-says-keith-thomas-ineligible
