Pitino has been involved in scandal after scandal going back to his days as an assistant coach in Hawaii. Apparently lying to the NCAA, providing strippers and prostitutes to players, arranging for cash payments to land recruits, and having and affair with the equipment manager's wife and paying for her abortion aren't deal breakers for good Roman Catholics of SJU. Money talks.

Speaking of money, St. John's is apparently trying to save some by attempting to fire former coach Mike Anderson "for cause" in order to avoid paying him what he is owed on his contract. The reasons they stipulate are in the link below, and seem vague and unenforceable. In response, Anderson is suing them. SJU might want to think about what happened to UConn when they tried to use trumped up reasoning to fire Kevin Ollie for cause. UConn spent a lot in legal costs and still had to pay Ollie the 11 million they owed him. They also had to settle Ollie lawsuit against them for an additional 3.5 million. Plus, it's bad publicity for a long time. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/35903881/mike-anderson-file-lawsuit-vs-st-john-firing

In 2013, the Catholic 7 split from the football-centered monstrocity that had become the Big East conference. ESPN and others: "The Big East is done as a basketball powerhouse conference."
Since that year, current Big East teams have won four NCAA titles: 2014, UCONN (then as a member of the AAC); 2016, Villanova; 2018, Villanova; 2023, UCONN again.
It's still my favorite basketball conference.

Creighton suffers a big blow as sophomore point guard Ryan Nembhard is planning to transfer. Rumor has it that he's heading to Arizona. Nembhard averaged 12 pts and 4 assists per game this season, and scored 30 against Baylor in the NCAA tournament.
If a school like Creighton, which came within two seconds of playing in the Final Four, loses a player like that, I'm guessing a big NIL cash payment has been promised. The game has changed.

Official Big East Poll for 22-23. 1. Creighton 2. Xavier 3. Villanova 4. UConn 5. Providence 6. St. John's 7. Seton Hall 8. Butler 9. Marquette 10. Georgetown 11. DePaul Player of the Year: Adam Sanogo, UConn All Conference Team: Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton Jared Bynum, Providence Posh Alexander, St. John's Colby Jones, Xavier Jack Nunge, Xavier (The Big East does not include the Player of the Year on the preseason all conference teams.) Final 2022-23 Big East Standings 1. Marquette 17-3, 29-7 2. Xavier 3. Creighton 4. UConn 5. Providence 6. Seton Hall 7. Villanova 8. St. John's 9. Butler 10. DePaul 11. Georgetown It was quite a year for the Big East. UConn won the national championship in dominant fashion, blowout after blowout. Marquette signaled it was back by winning the Big East regular season title and the conference tournament, after being picked to finish ninth. Creighton made the Elite Eight and just missed the Final Four. Xavier made the Sweeet Sixteen. Providence also made the Big Dance, falling to Kentucky in the first round. On the other end, Georgetown and DePaul continued to struggle. Georgetown poached Ed Cooley from Providence, and the Friars hired Kim English from George Mason as a replacement. St. John's fired Mike Anderson and hired Rick Pitino and all of his baggage. Villanova was 17-17, 10-10 in the first year after Jay Wright. Seton Hall joined Nova in the middle of the pack. Butler struggled, losing 13 conference games by double digits. Should be another interesting year in the Big East in 2023-24.

Anderson is seeking around $45 million per an arbitration filing. The amount includes the 11 million he had left on his contract and roughly 34 million in "punitive damages". Seems pretty apparent that St. John's tried to say they were firing Anderson for cause in order to save money and cut into that big price tag they are paying for Rick Pitino. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/37603396/fired-hoops-coach-mike-anderson-seeks-46m-st-johns

Ed Cooley has been focused on transfers for the class of 2023 recruiting cycle at Georgetown, landing players from North Carolina, Illinois, Kansas State, and Texas. This week he landed a commitment from 2024 high school recruit Thomas Sorber, a four star recruit ranked #70 in the class by Rivals. Sorber is a 6-9, 250 center. n.rivals.com/content/athletes/thomas-sorber-298304?view=pv

I'm glad you mentioned that. I was wondering the same thing. He looks really good. ESPN ranks him #50, but 24/7 only has him as a three star recruit!

He is a "big" 6.9, I'm surprised they showed him missing free throws and other shots.

It's not technically a Big East game anymore, but today's Georgetown vs Syracuse match-up is the first time since 1974 that Jim Boeheim has not been on the sidelines. đ˛

Rick Pitino out-Davises our own Mike Davis in tirade after recent loss. Copy of articleAfter latest St. Johnâs loss, Rick Pitino laments âsh*ttyâ facilities, lack of toughness and âlost seasonâ due to recruiting Updated: Feb. 19, 2024, 2:08 a.m.|Published: Feb. 18, 2024, 8:14 p.m. ELMONT, N.Y. -- After his team blew a 19-point lead against Seton Hall at UBS Arena and lost for the eighth time in 10 games, St. Johnâs coach Rick Pitino went off. The 71-year-old Naismith Hall of Famer spent about 15 minutes in his post-game press conference lamenting and lambasting the schoolâs âsh*ttyâ facilities, his playersâ lack of toughness and athleticism and his staffâs âlostâ recruiting effort in the transfer portal. âIf I said I was disappointed, that would be the understatement of the year,â Pitino said to begin his press conference after the 68-62 loss which helped Seton Hallâs NCAA Tournament chances while dealing another blow to those of St. Johnâs. Asked if he had second thoughts on taking the job last March after leaving Iona for a six-year, $20-million deal and then adding 12 new players at St. Johnâs, Pitino said, âItâs not St. Johnâs, itâs my team.â Pitino took a shot at St. Johnâs facilities but said they are not responsible for the teamâs struggles this season. âDo we have shi*tty facilities?â he asked rhetorically. âYes, we do. But weâre doing something about that.â He added: âBut thatâs not the reason weâre losing. Having sh*tty facilities has nothing to do with not guarding.â His main complaint after this game and in the past has been his playersâ lack of toughness and athleticism. âWe are so unathletic that we canât guard anybody without fouling,â he said. âFor me, Iâve always enjoyed the first year, and Iâm not gonna lie to you: This is the most unenjoyable experience of my lifetime. This has been so disappointing.â ... Pitino called the Seton Hall players tough, while lambasting his own teamâs lack of it. âWe just lack toughness...we donât move our feet on defense,â he said. âItâs really all the toughness things where we give up big leads.â Pitino called this a âlost seasonâ due to recruiting. âWe kind of lost this season with the way we recruited,â he said. âWe recruited the antithesis of the way I coach. Itâs a good group, they try hard, but theyâre just not very tough.â
