A transfer announced last week that caught my eye is rising sophomore Ahmaad Rorie leaving Oregon for Montana. The Titans were reported as having interest in Rorie way back in the early days of his recruitment. Rorie verbally committed early (as a HS sophomore) to California, signed with them in the fall of 2013, but then was granted his release and signed with Oregon in May 2014 after coach Mike Montgomery was nudged out at Cal. He had a solid freshman season at Oregon--played in all 36 games, starting 15. Against UD last November he started and had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 26 minutes of play. Overall he had a pretty solid freshman year by most standards. But his PT did drop a bit late in the year and I guess he saw himself slipping behind another rising soph PG, Casey Bensen, plus Oregon recruited a 4-star PG in this year's class. One suspects he and Dana Altman sat down and the latter indicated that Rorie would not be a key part of future plans. You just sort of figure a kid who starts 15 games as a freshman on an NCAA tournament team has a pretty bright future there, but I guess it is not always so. That one does stick out. His numbers are very good for a freshman point guard. That Oregon program has been winning, but doesn't seem like the most stable of environments. I'm kind of surprised to see him end up at Montana, given the fact that he was a heavy high major recruit out of high school and performed well at Oregon. It will be interesting to see who is the starting point guard for Montana in 2016-17, Rorie or former Titan target Walter Wright. :-)

Interesting. Sometimes in these things the school just wants to talk to the player--"no, we're not going to sign a release letter today. Come in next week, we'll discuss whatever problem there is, and if you still want a release, of course we'll give it to you"-- and the kid or his family rushes out and says "they're denying me a release!" We'll have to see what's going on here.

They gave him a release, with restrictions, as we thought might happen. espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13227615/memphis-tigers-release-austin-nichols

Unless the rules change, what are our odds of having Paris Bass for his 4th season? I'd say pretty slim.

That would also be the down side if Aaron Foster Smith really blows up this year or next. He had high major interest in high school, also.

Yet, to hear some tell it, those up transfers are no big deal.
Jeff Goodman @goodmanespn 2h2 hours ago BYU just picked up Elon transfer Elijah Bryant. Averaged 14 points per game as a freshman.

We'll have to see how Paris actually does on the court this year and next, but based on what I think he's likely to do I'd say there's a 5-10% chance he goes pro after his junior year, and about a 50% chance he transfers with immediate eligibility to a high major. Of course, I say that with zero knowledge of how happy he is at Detroit, etc. I'm more just looking at what I think his on-court development will look like, and the larger trends I see.
Coach Ray has generally held his good players. Except for Calliste, there have really been no major transfers out. Now and then someone will make some undocumented claim of dissension/divisions on the team, but my impression from afar is that the Titans are generally a pretty happy bunch who get along well.

Question: Do you now more often redshirt recruits? Bass (and Foster-Smith) will lose a year of eligibility if they transfers before their final season, since they'd have to sit a year, and they've already used up one of their 5 seasons to complete their 4 years of eligibility. On the one hand, a 5th year senior who has graduated is immediately eligible and has great freedom to transfer. I'm thinking some of these young men are doing it now just because they can. So it might increase the odds of not getting a 4th year of play from your star recruits. But it obviously decreases the odds that they will transfer up before then, unless they are really unhappy. So you increase the odds of getting three years rather than 1 or 2, but reduce the odds of getting 4 years.
Maybe coaches try to avoid such thoughts and base it on the needs of the team and player, but nonetheless, it's out there. I can't imagine that the possibility of Paris transferring hasn't ever crossed Coach's mind.

Another "up" grad transfer. How is it that there is a high major market for a 6-3 guard who shot 37% from the floor, 62% from the free throw line, and averaged 6 ppg at LaSalle? I don't get it.
From Twitter:
Jon Rothstein @jonrothstein 2m2 minutes ago La Salle transfer Khalid Lewis told @cbssports he will make his decision on Saturday. Down to Baylor and Illinois. Immediately eligible.

Notice how the transfers numbers can be vastly overstated. All these kids are listed as "transfers," but 10 years ago we simply would have called most of them "washouts" dropping down to a lower level of play or quitting entirely.
