Imagine you're the coach at Fresno State. You have a freshman guard, Niven Hart, who has a solid freshman season, shooting 45% from the floor, 40% from three, and scores just under nine points per game. Looks like a good building block for the future, but then Hart declares for the NBA draft, but doesn't sign with an agent. Just wants to get some feedback. As the coach, you're probably thinking, okay, he'll probably be back. Instead, on July 5, Hart announces he is staying in the NBA draft, and as the coach, you have another hole to fill in your lineup. Seems like a lot of guys who aren't close to NBA ready, and won't get drafted, are throwing away good opportunities chasing the NBA fantasy. tv5.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4593048/niven-hart

I think it entirely possible that the coach is well aware that the player has some issues that are conveniently obscured by a draft declaration and knew there was a strong possibility or absolute fact that the player was not going to be on the team this year. Color me skeptical on many of these declarations.

Big Chuck, I think it is true in some cases that "declaring for the draft" is cover for being academically ineligible or facing disciplinary issues.

The deadline for withdrawal from the NBA draft and returning to college is July 7 this year, per Jon Rothstein.

The Detroit Pistons won the draft lottery and will pick first in the upcoming NBA draft. My hope is that they take Cade Cunningham out of Oklahoma State. Saw him play several times this season and his game looks NBA ready.
Will be interesting to see when the first college senior is drafted.
