I was watching Hardwood Classics on the NBA TV this week, and they showed the broadcast of Magic Johnson's first regular season game as a Laker. Starting at Power Forward for LA was Spencer Haywood, and he scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in 37 minutes. 1979-80 was a tough year for Spencer, and he was released from the team during the playoffs for non-basketball related reasons. Even at that stage of his career, he was still a capable player, however. It was good to see him in action. I remember watching this game on television when it was first broadcast (tape delay in Detroit) and getting a kick out of seeing a Titan playing in the NBA.
"Starting at forward, from the UNIVERSITY OF DETROIT, Spencer Haywood!"

Dave DeBusschere is ranked #111
CMU alum Dan Roundfield (Chadsey HS) at #177. He, James McElroy (Murray Wright HS) and Ben Poquette (East Lansing area) anchored those tough Central Michigan teams we played back in the 1970s. Of course we had Tyler, Long, Duerod, etc. battling them. Lots of local talent & pride for both schools. It made for some very intense and exciting games
However, Spencer Haywood was the best. NBA HOF, 1968 Olympic hero and U of D HOF

Key quote from the article: "I returned from the Olympics with a plan to play at the University of Detroit and get my friend Will Robinson chosen as the first Black coach in the NCAA. I felt a responsibility to the Black community. I just wanted all of us Black people to succeed. Once I officially signed, the organization drew back on their promise to make Will the coach. I felt betrayed and lost. I wanted to leave school, but I was out of options. I played one season and then had to make a decision. Transferring would mean I’d have to wait a year before playing again. I was invited to join the ABA, a professional league." The article also announces a new book coming out in October - The Spencer Haywood Rule, a book about the life of the Hall of Famer by Marc J. Spears and Gary Washburn www.triumphbooks.com/the-spencer-haywood-rule-products-9781629377766.php?page_id=21

Condolences to Spencer Haywood, whose wife Linda passed away a couple of days ago. 36 years together.

Spencer is being interviewed on MSNBC right now. His hometown of Silver City was completely devastated by the tornado that went through Mississippi.
