After following the UCLA vs Chaminade game yesterday and seeing the halftime score of MSU 26, UCLA 23 this afternoon, one thought comes to mind: If the UCLA fans wanted Ben Howland fired because they didn't think he ran an exiting enough offense, they really aren't going to like the rock fights that Mick Cronin teams have.

Rough day for the PAC 12 yesterday. They are hoping for a rebound year after struggling recently, but so far it is a mixed bag.
Unranked St. John's beat #16 Arizona. (Maybe hiring Mike Anderson wasn't the disaster that a lot of basketball media people said it would be for SJU.)
Creighton went to Arizona State and won. ASU is 8-4 and got beat by FORTY POINTS earlier in the week by St. Mary's. Probably not what the boosters had in mind when they fired Herb Sendek and paid a boatload of money for Hurley.
Utah, fresh off of beating Kentucky, lost by 28 points to San Diego State.
UCLA got beat by 10 by a struggling North Carolina team.
California got beat by Boston College. 9-2 Oregon State got beat by a Texas A&M squad that came in under .500. 11-1 Stanford just barely beat an under .500 San Diego team.
On the plus side for the PAC 12, Colorado beat #13 Dayton and USC beat LSU. Oregon State had a tough time with Texas Southern but pulled out the win.

Final Pac 12 standing. The Ducks took the title by one game. UCLA did well under Mick Cronin after a slow start. USC, Arizona, and Arizona State all seemed to underperform based on their talent. Colorado was the best team in the conference early before a late fade. Washington fell HARD after two good seasons in a row. I don't think any of the coaches are on the hot seat. Some at Oregon State might be contemplating a move, but they recently gave Coach Tinkle a contract extension, so you never know.

Well, if you are going to hire a father to get his sons, you won't find a situation that got more bang for the buck than the Mobley situation at USC. Trojan head coach Andy Enfield hired AAU coach Eric Mobley in March of 2018. Two months later, Eric's son Isaiah committed to USC for the class of 2019. Isaiah is universally considered a five star recruit. Today, Eric's younger son Evan committed to the Trojans. He is ranked as the top player in the class of 2020. As a bonus, Eric Mobley also brought along another one of his AAU players, 2019 5 star recruit Onyega Okongwu. Used to be it was frowned upon to hire a coach just to get a couple of connected recruits, but it is pretty much accepted as the way things are done nowadays. Given the on paper haul from hiring Mobley, no one at USC will be complaining. www.latimes.com/sports/usc/story/2019-08-05/evan-mobley-usc-commitment-college-basketball-prospectEvan Mobley was named National high school player of the year.

This article touches on many of the modern day aspects of NCAA basketball, all in a few paragraphs. Arizona State lands a verbal commitment from a 6-8 PF from the Ukraine, who is just 16 years old. The Sun Devils needed some front court help because forward Romello White declared for the NBA draft, then withdrew, and then decided to transfer to Mississippi State. (The Romello situation is interesting. As a junior he averaged 10 and 9 for ASU, which went 20-11, 11-7, with good talent coming back. Why transfer?) The Sun Devils also picked up a JUCO power forward. Right now, the roster is at a standstill because ASU guys have two guys who declared for the NBA Draft. If they both come back, the team is at the scholarship limit. Lots of balls to keep juggling if you are a college coach. Of course, it's easier for high major coach like Bobby Hurley, who gets millions of dollars for his troubles. www.azcentral.com/story/sports/college/asu/2020/06/24/asu-basketball-adds-ukrainian-power-forward-pavlo-dziuba/3254188001/

Like other schools we have mentioned (Kansas, LSU) Arizona is recruiting well despite the prospect of NCAA sanctions in the near future. The Wildcats landed a verbal commitment from class of 2021 guard Kenneth "KJ" Simpson Jr.. Simpson is a four star recruit who had offers from a bunch of the PAC 12. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2021/k-j-simpson-233824
