Here's a little curiousity: The Titans have now gone 9 consecutive games without a loss in Men's Soccer. However, the last 6 of those, including all 5 conference games to date, have been ties. Because of the scoring system they use, in which a win is worth 3 points and a tie just 1 (meaning a team that is 2-3-0 is ahead of a team, like the Titans, that is 0-0-5), the Titans, one of two unbeaten teams in the conference, are in 8th place.

Hmm, that is curious and the fact the season is only 4 games old is probably showing the challenges with RPI when there are limited games. For example, UDM has 2 wins (2-0 Niagra and 3-2 San Diego State) matched with 2 losses (0-8 Clemson, 0-1 San Diego). I sure would love if we could get a program or two across ANY of the sports to be competitive at the top of the HL year in and year out.

We had what was probably the best women's coach in the HL. Mike Lupenec is an excellent coach and understands the finer details of the game. He will be missed and really hard to replace. I was sorry to see him leave. I have been following the men and women but have not had the opportunity to see them in person yet. I'll probably catch them in GB or Milwaukee later this year.

UP, I agree with you 100%. He fielded competitive teams and got his players to perform in the classroom. I am sure he would have liked to have coached a game "under the lights" after 26 years. I know we talked about it often enough. I will be thinking of him later this month when the Ladies play that first home night game. I have met new Coach Steve Shelton and came away very impressed. He will have a tough road this season, but I believe he will rebuild the program and be a positive force for the program. His local ties will enable us to move forward. We are fortunate to find someone with his credentials and local knowledge for the program. I wish him the best.

I might be wrong but I consider the Detroit area to be a hot bed for soccer. The leftovers in recruiting should be better than 80% of the country.

We lost a very good goalkeeper last year and had no obvious replacement. Mike was gone before the summer break and Steve was not hired until late in the summer. No summer workouts and fitness was an issue early in the season. Even when hired Steve had obligations over the summer that prevented immediate full time activity. Compared with Shelton, Davis was an early hire. Add to that a new playing style that the players had to adapt to. Mike had a different philosophy and recruited players to that style. Steve will have to remake the team to his. I saw a lot I liked, but overall it went about as expected. I am looking forward to next season.

If not the goal keepers probably are not going to be as good as Mikes. Sheehy was one of the better goal keepers next to Jeff Caesar to ever come out of the metro Detroit area. Mike had a good understanding of controlling and directing a defense. A major mistake a lot of Soccer coaches make is thinking they can teach a keeper even if they have never been one. There are so many little subtle drills and techniques that go into helping a keeper improve and read the field.

Unfortunately, Mike Sheehy did not return.

The Titans’ late afternoon soccer game with Michigan ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods. UDM scored on its first shot to take a brief lead. Overall the Titans were outshot 24-4, so they probably feel good about escaping Ann Arbor with the tie against a Big Ten team on the road.
UDM is now 1-14-4 in games versus Michigan. The Titans were picked for 8th place in the Horizon in preseason polls.

Let's hope that this is a good indicator for the Titans this season. We've always struggled scoring but had good defense and goalkeeping.
Samory Powder, the player ejected on a red card played well last season as a freshman. Hopefully he can stay in the games and give Titan foes a third player to guard. Nice to see Jonathan Kliewer do well in his (I think) debut game starting in goal. Big shoes to fill in graduated senior Devin Mendez.
