Memphis is making a lot of noise on the recruiting trail under coach Penny Hardaway, landing another ESPN Top 100 player this week. The class of 2019 so far is ranked anywhere from #2 to #5 in the nation, depending on who is doing the ranking, and they still have room for more. Several of the players signed the past couple of years under Hardaway had some connection to him from his days as a high school and AAU coach. Memphis won a game in the NIT this past season. While they lose most of their contributors to graduation, no other conference program is coming close to bringing in the talent the Tigers bring in for next year. www.espn.com/colleges/basketball/recruiting/school/_/id/235/class/2019And the hits keep on coming for Memphis. Rayjon Tucker, a grad transfer from Little Rock who averaged 20 points per game in 2018-19, committed to the Tigers this afternoon.

Per Paul Biancardi on Twitter:
"ESPN no.17 Precious Achiuwa to Memphis. Achiuwa is a high level athlete. His calling card is to compete on the glass & finish plays. He is extremely valuable & versatile as a switch defender. Offense is developing. Memphis is now no.1 in the class rankings."

Cincinnati got some good news as Jarron Cumberland withdraws from the NBA draft and will be returning to the Bear Cats for his senior season. Cumberland, a 6-5 guard, averaged 19 points per game last season.

Watch out for USF next season. From the Twitterverse:
Jon Rothstein:
Early prediction on South Florida's 19-20 starting five: LaQuincy Rideau, David Collins, Justin Brown, Alexis Yetna, Michael Durr.
Return over 90 percent of scoring, minutes, and rebounding from a 24-win team.
Will be an NCAA contender in 2020.

Brannen is turning Cincy into a Horizon League team. He has now taken as transfers, Vogt from NKU, Sorolla from Valpo (he played when they were in the HL), and now Cumberland from Cincy.

We had offered Saunders. Brannen had offered him while at NKU.

I was wondering how John Brannen would recruit at Cincinnati, and early returns are good. Today he got the commitment of Kansas native Zach Harvey, a 2020 shooting guard who is reclassifying to 2019. Some services rank him in the top 50 in the nation. From the linked article: "He'll join a host of newcomers Brannen, hired in April to replace Mick Cronin, has added to the UC roster for the upcoming season: •graduate transfer guard Jaevin Cumberland •graduate transfer point guard Chris McNeal (Tennessee Tech/New Mexico) •graduate transfer center Jaume Sorolla (Valparaiso) •freshman guard Mika Adams-Woods (Syracuse, New York) •freshman guard and Jeremiah Davenport (Cincinnati - Moeller High School) •transfer center Chris Vogt (Northern Kentucky)." www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/university-of-cincinnati/2019/06/27/zach-harvey-cincinnati-bearcats-uc-john-brannen/1581492001/

Coach Sampson added a major transfer to the Cougars as former KU Jayhawk Quinten Grimes committed to Houston. Grimes is a rising sophomore who placed in name in the NBA draft after this past season. He withdrew on the last day but decided to transfer rather than compete for minutes in a talented KU backcourt. He is expected to apply for a waiver, but I don't know what grounds he could use to get it.
Sampson seems to be building a beast at UH.
