1979 Titan montage. Although the pictures are grainy and the faces partially obscured, and the Titans weren't entirely consistent with numbers that year, I believe we are looking, clockwise from top left, at Terry Duerod, Earl Cureton, Duerod again, and Arthur Bright. Correct me if you know better.

Spencer Haywood strikes a pose. There are remarkably few shots or videos of Spencer in a Titan uniform--virtually none. But there are a few. Here Spencer dunks on Mississippi State in 1968 Motor City Tournament. The Titans won 86-61, advancing to 9-0. Click on the photo to enlarge.

With college football starting this weekend, here's a photo of the Titans' undefeated 1928 squad, coached by Gus Dorais. In 1933, college football historian Parke Davis went back through the record books in great detail, and retroactively named the Titans the 1928 National Champions. The NCAA recognizes Davis's selections and includes them in its record book. This is a somewhat idiosyncratic selection--1928 predates the AP poll, but the two mathematical systems at the time, Dickinson and Houlgate, selected Southern Cal and Georgia Tech, respectively. Most other retroactive rankings --Helms, which is a human system, and several computerized systems, go with Georgia Tech. Sagarin's computer ranking retroactively goes with USC. Anyway, to the unbeaten 1928 Titans.

R.I.P. John Kirwan. Kirwan played for the Titans from the 1949-1951 seasons, and passed his coach, Bob Calihan, to become the Titans all-time leading scorer at the time. Kirwan was a second team All Missouri Valley selection in 1951. A Triple UD grad-- UDJ for high school, UD, UD Law--Kirwan started college late, having volunteered for the army after graduating high school in 1945. After college he went on to serve many years as a judge in Wayne County. www.detroittitans.com/news/2017/8/20/mens-basketball-titans-mourn-the-loss-of-hall-of-famer-judge-john-kirwan.aspx

SI, March 15, 1999. They correctly picked the Titans (whom they ranked 42nd in the preseason) to upset UCLA, but incorrectly picked our guys to advance to the Sweet 16. ..........................

Wow, that must've been an exciting time. I googled Terry Thomas and discovered that he passed away in 1998. Have any ideal what happened?
