Some footage. Not super old, still almost 30 years. Not a great moment or game - it's more like Michigan highlights - but figured it would be good to save it here with other Titan stuff

The University Board of Trustees officially adopted the name Titans in 1924.

I think if Smokey would have stayed at the U of D, he could have been a legend, kind of a Detroit Ray Meyers.

I think if Smokey would have stayed at the U of D, he could have been a legend, kind of a Detroit Ray Meyers. I agree. I think he would have been successful, and I think he would have stayed here even as he stayed in demand of other programs. The program was on the way up under him and I expect we would have seen it continue to grow in profile and revenue.

He was the right man t the right time, but a West Coast job, and West Coast money are hard to not take. Back in the '70s his brother-in-law, Ed Carter, and his sister Ozela ran a company called Carter Cartage which a company I worked for used. I met him many times, and nice man.

I'm not familiar with that Pistons jersey, but I kinda really like it!

Yeah, I remember the lightning bolt uniforms. Didn't last long, but I liked them.

I think if Smokey would have stayed at the U of D, he could have been a legend, kind of a Detroit Ray Meyers. Smokey was a good coach and a great recruiter. A lot of the Vitale recruits were due to his efforts. He would laugh at the reference to Ray Meyers though. About 180 degree different people. I really liked Smokey and he was the right guy for Detroit (the team and the city) at that time.

Ray Meyer had more in common with Bob Calihan than Smokey Gaines.

Six (count em) six fumbles by Detroit (Mercy): 1. They changed their name (about 45 years later) 2. They dropped football (a couple years later) 3. They stayed in the MCC/Horizon long after it became a Nothing League (about 20 years ago and counting) 4. They hired Willie McCarter 5. They hired Larry Geracioti and the worst fumble of all..... 6. They let all their natural rivals fall away until we were left with OU to root against!
NOW, BEAT OU LIKE A DRUM EVERY TIME WE PLAY THEM AND WIN THE DAMN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR AND I'LL FORGIVE AT LEAST 5 OF THE FUMBLES!
