Chalk up another for Rick Stansbury. Charles Bassey, a consensus top 5 national recruit from the Class of 2019, will reclassify to the Class of '18 and enroll at Western Kentucky. He is already a projected lottery pick in 2019. The 6–foot–11, five-star center played for Aspire Academy in Louisville, averaing 19.4 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks this past year. He already had offers from UCLA, Kansas, and a host of other blue bloods. Of course, Mitch Robinson--whose signing started this thread--didn't work out all that well, so we will see what happens here. A little more background on the Bassey commitment to WKU and why the Hill Toppers are still working on getting him eligible for the upcoming season. kycir.org/2018/06/21/aspire-academy-louisville-desales-bassey/

College of Charleston gets some good news today as 2019 Brenden Tucker verbally commits. Tucker is ranked a three star on Rivals and ESPN, and a four star on 24/7. Rivals and 24/7 put him in the top 150 nationally in the class. Tucker reportedly had offers from Georgia, Northwestern, Ole Miss, and Clemson, among many others. If it sticks, that's a nice pick up for C of C. 247sports.com/Player/Brendan-Tucker-46035928

We'll see if this one sticks and if this player's ESPN ranking is accurate, but WKU had another news making commitment today as 2020 center Nick Ongenda committed to the Hilltoppers. Ongenda is ranked #59 in the nation by ESPN. Other outlets have him as a three star recruit. Of course, it's early so we'll see if the verbal commitment sticks for 13 months. Also, we'll keep an eye out for any changes on the WKU staff, as the Mitch Robinson and Charles Bassey signings were accompanied by Coach Stansbury hiring the player's Godfather and guardian, respectively. www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/234918/nick-ongenda

As expected, Nevada coach Musselman ran off some players to make room for newcomers on this year's roster. I've never been a fan of that.

Looking at the ESPN college scoreboard today I noticed that Western Kentucky is sitting at 9-9, 2-3 in the win/loss column. The Hilltoppers are in ninth place in the conference. About two and a half years after new coach Rick Stansbury made a splash getting a commitment from Mitch Robinson (and started this thread), the steak hasn't matched the sizzle. WKU was 15-17 in Stansbury's first year, including a loss to a really bad Titan team. The second year was better, with a 27-11 record and a trip to the NIT semis. This year looks like a step back, despite the fact that WKU has brought in the best classes in Conference USA the past three years. Looks like the idea that WKU would breeze through the conference solely on the overwhelming talent that RS was going to bring is hasn't proven to be accurate yet.
Lots more to the game than recruiting.

UMass is, I guess, still considered a mid major for our purposes, and they got a verbal commitment from Tre Mitchell, a four star center ranked in the top 70-80 range by several services. Interesting development, because that program appears in chaos, with all three assistant coaches being let go and the team on a downward trend in the win/loss column. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/umass-nabs-the-commitment-of-tre-mitchell

Bassey did reclassify to 2018 and sign with WKU. (Shortly after he signed, WKU announced that his legal guardian had been hired as an assistant coach.) Unlike Mitch Robinson, Bassey actually played for WKU, and played well, averaging 15 points, 10 boards, and 2.4 blocks per game. It didn't really translate to team success, as the Hill Toppers finished 20-14, 11-7. They lost in the conference tournament to Old Dominion and did not play in any post season tourney. That was a decline from the previous year, when the HTs went 24-10, 14-4 in the regular season before advancing to the NIT semis. Bassey declared for the NBA draft, but might return after "testing the waters". As a mid major, if you can get a guy like Bassey (or Robinson) you take him, of course. I don't know that you should hire family members on the coaching staff to get those players, as Stansbury did in both incidents. Also, it is important to keep in mind that it doesn't necessarily translate into great seasons.

Pump the breaks on the Rawls commitment to WKU, as he posted this on Twitter today. Looks like he is having second thoughts about reclassifying. "I am a Western Kentucky commit for the class of 2020, I will revisit my options of the potential of becoming part of the 2019 class with my family and close people later in the summer if it makes since and it is the best for me!"

Charles Coleman, a seven foot center who is ranked as a three star recruit by the services, committed to East Carolina today. Worth noting about this is that Coleman had previously committed to Wake Forest before backing out of that in April, and had received recent legitimate offers from Duke, Pittsburgh, and other high majors. Rather than jumping on a offer like Duke's, where he would likely be deep on the bench, Coleman decided to go where he is definitely a Plan A recruit, not a Plan C roster filler as he would have been with the Blue Devils. I think it is a smart decision on his part. Hopefully, for the sake of ECU, he sticks with it. 247sports.com/college/east-carolina/Article/ECU-Basketball-Recruiting-Charles-Coleman-Commits-132365824/

UPDATE: Brown stuck around for a year at Nevada, averaging 3 points and 2 rebounds per game, but transferred after the season. He committed to Arizona today.
