Now he can average 3 ppg and 2 RPGs at Arizona....after sitting out a year. Who advises these kids? I think a lot of these players get "advice" from people who are not really interested in the long term best interests of the player. This young man was a McDonald's All American, and I am sure that a lot of people are trying to just get him to the pros as fast as possible. That can backfire.

We'll see if this one sticks and if this player's ESPN ranking is accurate, but WKU had another news making commitment today as 2020 center Nick Ongenda committed to the Hilltoppers. Ongenda is ranked #59 in the nation by ESPN. Other outlets have him as a three star recruit. Of course, it's early so we'll see if the verbal commitment sticks for 13 months. Also, we'll keep an eye out for any changes on the WKU staff, as the Mitch Robinson and Charles Bassey signings were accompanied by Coach Stansbury hiring the player's Godfather and guardian, respectively. www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/234918/nick-ongenda Well, it didn't stick. Nick Ongenda switched his commitment from WKU to DePaul and reclassified to the class of 2019.

USF is in the AAC, but I think they qualify as a mid major. They certainly aren't a high major. Today, they got a verbal commitment from Caleb Murphy, who is ranked #52 in the country by Rivals. First ever four star pick up for South Florida. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2020/caleb-murphy-235989

Western Kentucky strikes again with the "mid major coup", landing point guard Zion Harmon, a four star who is ranked #40 in the class of 2021 by 24/7 Sports and 20th by ESPN. Had offers from Kansas and other high majors.
The Hilltoppers have been a frequent subject in this thread since it was started, but it hasn't translated into NCAA tournament appearances. This season is an incomplete, of course, but WKU finished 20-10, 13-5 in conference, in third place. That's Stansbury's fourth year at the helm. They have won 61% of their games while he has been there, but the Conference USA dominance that a lot of "experts" predicted based on Stanbury's ability to recruit hasn't happened.

Chalk up another for Rick Stansbury. Charles Bassey, a consensus top 5 national recruit from the Class of 2019, will reclassify to the Class of '18 and enroll at Western Kentucky. He is already a projected lottery pick in 2019. The 6–foot–11, five-star center played for Aspire Academy in Louisville, averaing 19.4 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks this past year. He already had offers from UCLA, Kansas, and a host of other blue bloods. Of course, Mitch Robinson--whose signing started this thread--didn't work out all that well, so we will see what happens here. Western Kentucky hired some guy named Hennssy Auriantal as an assistant coach. He is Charles Bassey's guardian. Update on Charles Bassey, a highly celebrated recruit for WkU. Bassey played two and a half excellent years for the Hilltoppers. The center averaged 15, 10, and 2 as a freshman. He only played ten games as a sophomore, suffering a severe leg injury. He put in the hard work in rehab and averaged 18, 12, and 3 as a junior this past season, shooting 59% from the floor. He's declared for the draft and is staying there. Guy was born too late. In the 80s a guy with his size and production would be a sure top ten pick. Today, he's hoping to sneak in at the end of the first round. Doesn't shoot the three. Hennssy Auriantal, Bassey's guardian who was hired by WKU to secure Bassey's commitment, is still on the staff at this time. However, Coach Stansbury likes to use that third assistant spot as a bargaining chip in recruiting. www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/how-western-kentuckys-charles-bassey-went-from-a-knee-injury-to-a-possible-first-round-pick-in-nba-draft/

UMass is, I guess, still considered a mid major for our purposes, and they got a verbal commitment from Tre Mitchell, a four star center ranked in the top 70-80 range by several services. Interesting development, because that program appears in chaos, with all three assistant coaches being let go and the team on a downward trend in the win/loss column. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/umass-nabs-the-commitment-of-tre-mitchellUpdate on Tre Mitchell: Had a great freshman season for the Minutemen, putting up 19 and 7 on 52% shooting. Then...as soon as the season was over he hit the transfer portal. He visited Florida State recently, but has all kinds of Power Five interest. I think we'll see that on the rare occasions that a mid major pulls off a coup, it's usually not a long term benefit.

Long Beach State with a notable commitment, landing guard AJ Neal, who is ranked #128 in the nation by Rivals in the class of 2021. Neal had offers from Power Five programs, including Arizona State, Auburn, and NC State. n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2021/a-j-neal-208912

Another West Coast team with a coup, as Fresno State lands 2022 guard Joseph Hunter. Hunter is rated a four star recruit by Rivals and 24/7, and had multiple high major offers. Rivals ranks him #72 in the nation. 24/7 ranks him #50. Hunter, a Fresno native, said that the staff recruited him early and often and never stopped making him feel like a priority. Sometimes that works.
For comparison's sake, this would be like the University of Detroit beating out Michigan State for Detroit natives Pierre Brooks or Jaden Akins.

Here's an eye catching commitment. St. Thomas landed a pledge from Kendall Blue, ranked by Rivals as #100 in the nation in the class of 2022 and a four star recruit. St. Thomas just recently moved to D1 and they are in the Summit League. Blue had offers from Marquette, George Washington, and others. 24/7 ranks him a little lower, as a three star and #171 in the nation. Future 150 ranks him a four star and #54 in the class. Even if 24/7's lower ratings are most accurate, it's still a huge pick up for St. Thomas. Blue is an instate kid who just let other players know that's St. Thomas is worth considering. Hopefully for the Tommies the verbal commitment holds and Blue laces them up with St. Thomas next fall. sports.yahoo.com/east-ridge-basketball-standout-kendall-220300601.html

(Imagining this from an outsider's perspective) A recent noteworthy mid major commitment took place recently when Sonny Johnson Jr. committed to Detroit, as confirmed by his father's social media post. Johnson is a three star recruit on Rivals and 24/7 Sports who was previously committed to Penn State prior to the coaching change. The 5-10 point guard shows a total of four Big Ten offers. Kudos to Detroit coach Mike Davis and staff who worked to build a relationship with Johnson before his Penn State commitment and obviously left a good impression. I imagine the success that Antoine Davis is having for Detroit will provide another reason for future guard recruits to consider the Titans. 247sports.com/Recruitment/Sonny-Johnson-Jr-122808/RecruitInterests/
