An updated version of a Detroit News story on the Titans WBB situation provided a little bit of information about progress being made to fill all the vacated roster spots:
Gilbert said she has commitments for about half of next year's roster, though not all letters have been signed. The only known players on next year's roster are Taylor Blunt, a guard from Pennsylvania, and forward Irena Murua, a transfer from Louisiana Tech.
"With our roster, we're moving forward in a positive fashion," Gilbert said. "We have identified some individuals we believe can compete in this league."

Our school's policy requires any player be admitted before they can sign a letter of intent or a scholarship and room & board agreement. Fortunately, this year, letters of intent can be signed up to August 1st, I believe. This is a major reason why we don't get official recruiting news as quickly as other schools.

My error, this was actually from a Detroit Free Press story, not the Detroit News. Both local papers have now run long pieces that include Vowels’ and Gilbert’s remarks regarding various issues identified in multiple earlier articles.

Murua and Pereda are from the Basque Country--which is along the French border and is one of the most beautiful parts of the world, IMHO--and Trawally from Barcelona. Murua's maternal surname--Txintxurreta--is about as Basque as a name can get. No obvious connection on the coaching staff. Murua and Pereda both played for Araski, a Basque club in Spain.

I saw an Emma Trawally Porta of Barcelona had signed with St. Francis (NY) in November 2019, but she never made it on their 2020-21 roster. She is listed 6'2" in the press release. My guess is that COVID restrictions and the strong outbreaks in the Barcelona area prevented here from gaining entry into the USA last season.

My guess is that COVID restrictions and the strong outbreaks in the Barcelona area prevented here from gaining entry into the USA last season. Either that or she and other players from overseas decided to stay close to home during the pandemic. At any rate, it's good to see that we're adding some players who had other D1 offers/LOIs. Can't be an easy time recruiting right now.

Here's Sonia Pereda's announcement of her commitment to play here for us.
And picking up on Commissioner's notice of two Basques at our university.

So we're traveling around Basque country a decade or so ago, staying in a little village on the Spanish side of the border, and I needed a new power cord for my laptop. Our inn keeper suggested we drive to this little town of about 3000 on the French side, where there was a store on the right side of the road that sold computer accessories. So we drove up there, and went in to the empty store. After a couple minutes, an elderly gentleman came in and said some sort of greeting. Our conversation went something like this:
ME: Hello. Do you speak English? ELDERLY BASQUE GENTLEMAN- No. (brief pause). Parlez vous francaise? ME: No. (brief pause). Habla espanol? EBG: No. (lengthy pause as we stare at one another and I try to think of how to show him what I need. Then he says with this "might as well try" look on his face): Euskalduna?
I don't expect to ever be asked again if, just maybe, I might speak Basque.

On the NJCAA website, I found this interesting information about Coach Collins' new commit.
Imani McNeal is a JUCO transfer from South Georgia Tech College in Americus, GA. She was the leading scorer on her team at 10.0 ppg. Also, she averaged 4.6 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game. She played the small forward position there. Her team was 22-4 and lost in the first round of the NCJAA women's tourney to Tyler(TX) JC. The tweet announcing her commitment is from her JUCO coach.
She transferred to South Georgia Tech College from Ranger College where she played as a freshman there. At Ranger, she averaged 16 minutes per game, 5.4 ppg, 3 rebounds per game and 1 assist per game. That Ranger team went 22-8.
She appears to have had a solid JUCO career and brings a winning experience to us from JUCO.
