Announced on the first day of the signing period, no less. Just when Titan fans were hoping for good news, the opposite arrives.
Yeah, "devastating" is the right word. I thought there was a possibility that Corey Allen might want to leave, but I never considered Hogan might be at risk.

Better he announce today than in August like Calliste did. It is possible that this might open the door for a big man who might not have signed on otherwise. We survived Spencer's early exit....this one is more like Darian McKinney.

Let's hope that BA can re-recruit Jaleel to remain in Detroit...similar to what he did with Cory Allen.

This Detroit News article discusses the Hogan situation without adding any new info. One thing appears to be true: Hogan has not decided to return to the Titans. If he had, there would be no sensible reason to keep that information under wraps. That kind of speculation only hurts. The article makes the point that official word could come soon. Well, I think they meant official "word"; the article only said "An official could come soon". Way to go, today's journalism. www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/2017/04/28/star-forward-jaleel-hogans-future-udm-limbo/101039196/

Reports on social media say that Jaleel Hogan has committed to UAB.

So he sits out a year so that he can play one year. That seems dumb. Unless he graduates from Detroit in 3 yrs.

I think kids don't appreciate reputation and a "place in the record books," so to speak. Before Jason Calliste left for Oregon I had noted in a post somewhere all the various milestones and Titan career-rankings he might set/enter as a senior. I don't blame him for going to the glories of Oregon, but I don't think kids always think of that. Jason will have the memories of his year at Oregon, and an NCAA appearance, and he's still a 1000-point club member for Titans, but he won't be considered a Titan great.
Jaleel is merely going to UAB--a step up, I suppose, but not a huge one into the luxurious locker rooms and flights of Oregon, or nearly guaranteed at-large bids with a solid season. With another year at Detroit Hogan would have hit the 1000 point club and could easily have risen into the top 20 Titan scorers all-time (the same # of points as last year would have done it). The top 10 would have been within reach, though requiring a big season, averaging about 20 ppg, depending on the number of games played. The same number of blocks as last year would have placed him 9th on the Titans' all-time list. He's #2 on the Titans all-time FG% list, and that probably wouldn't have changed. He already has the 4th and 10 best single field goal percentages, and it's not inconceivable that he could have challenged Ryvon Covile's school record of .637.
Anyway, we'll miss Jaleel.

I think you are right about the record books and how kids view them. I doubt that most freshmen are checking the press guides when they hit campus these days to see where the records are. Several of the Titan players I knew back in the 80s did just that (as did players I knew at other college programs). Today's players seem more focused on the next thing. I don't mean that just in the case of Jaleel, but it would have been nice to see him climb the ranks. His decision to leave is puzzling on the surface, and I do wonder what is behind it. But I wish him the best at UAB, if that's where he ends up. I wonder when we get an announcement about that.

That is a messy situation. Ugh. Yes it is, does anyone know if Jaleel Hoogan is enrolled in summer school? I remember reading an article years ago about former Detroit Cooley and San Diego State basketball player Anthony Watson, he became ineligible before his senior season, according to the article he worked 60 hours a week at a gas station, took a full load of classes and lived in his car in order to pay tuition to regain his eligibility. I hope Jaleel hangs in there.
