The Titans backed into the MAAC Conference tournament yesterday when Marist beat Siena, 6-5. A Siena win would have given the Saints the 4th and final spot in the tournament. And it looked grim for the Titans as Siena led 5-3 with just 1 minute left to play. But Marist scored 3 goals in the final minute, completing a comeback from a 5-1 4th quarter deficit. The Titans--who led the MAAC race at the halfway point of the season--enter the postseason reeling, having lost 4 in a row. The Titans lost a non-conference matchup to Cleveland State yesterday, 13-6. The Titans will play top-seeded Monmouth, which finished the regular season unbeaten in conference play, this Friday, May 5, at 4:00 at Marist. The game will be televised on MAAC-TV through this link: www.maacsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=17400&ATCLID=210348310.

As the Titans peer out from the ruins of the men's basketball program, hoping to snag a new coach passing by, our Wannabe #2 sport, Lacrosse, carries on.
The Titans are 4-6 overall, 2-1 in the MAAC. The Titans played a tough non-conference schedule. They lost close matches at then #6 (now #10) Notre Dame (7-10, after leading 6-5 after 3 quarters) and then to #4 (now unranked-receiving votes) Ohio State (7-8). The Titans also lost to Marquette, which is also currently in the "receiving votes" category of the national rankings, and to perennial power Air Force.
In conference play, the Titans are in third place, with a loss to first place Quinnipiac and wins over 4th and 5th place Monmouth and Marist. The Titans face Canisius--tied with Quinnipiac for first place--in Buffalo on Saturday, and wrap up the conference season with matches at 6th place Manhattan and home against last place Siena. Winning two of the three would guarantee the Titans a spot in the 4 team conference tournament, and but winning just 1 would likely do the job, too.
Titan goalie Logan Shamblin has been MAAC Freshman of the Week three times this season. Attacker Brent Erskine also has a Freshman of the Week recognition. Senior Midfielder Charlie Hayes has twice been recognized as Defensive Player of the Week, and junior attacker Matthew Vangalen recognized once as Offensive player of the week.

The Titans scored the last 5 goals of the game to defeat first place Canisius 12-10 on Saturday in Buffalo. The win moved the Titans (3-1) past Canisius and into second place in the MAAC behind Quinnipiac, which earlier dealt UofD its only conference defeat. Detroit's last two conference games are against Manhattan and Siena, both of which are winless in conference, so the Titans have an excellent chance to gain the #2 seed in the conference tournament behind Quinnipiac, and first place isn't out of the question. A win in either match will clinch a spot in the 4 team conference tournament.
The Titans play at Manhattan this Saturday, and then close out the conference regular season at Titan Field against Siena on April 20.

The Titan Lacrosse men manhandled Manhattan yesterday, 18-8, as Junior Matthew Vangalen broke the Titan single match record for point with 11 (7 goals and 4 assists). The win clinches a spot in the 4 team MAAC tournament that will decide the Conference's NCAA championship representative. Barring major upsets, the Titans will be seeded 2nd in the conference tournament. The Titans close out the MAAC Conference season next Friday when they host Siena at Titan field at 4:00 p.m.

The Titans swamped Siena (what are the odds of 2 of the 4 teams still without men's basketball coaches meeting up?) 14-8 on Friday, finishing the Metro Atlantic Conference regular season at 5-1. They'll be seeded second in the MAAC tournament beginning on May 3. The Titans can still finish in a tie for first in the regular season, if Quinnipiac (5-0 in conference) loses its season finale at 5th place Marist next weekend, but the Bobcats hold the tie-breaker over Detroit by virtue of a 14-11 win over the Titans. Detroit will play the winner of next week's Canisius/Monmouth matchup in the first round. Before that, the Titans finish the regular season next weekend with a non-conference match against Cleveland State. That will be next Saturday at 1:00 at Titan Field.
Junior Attacker Matthew Vangalen was also named Offensive Player of the Week for last week's 7 goal, 4 assist performance against Manhattan. Vangalen's performance set a Titan record for points in a game, and the most by any MAAC player since 2012.

So if you're in the Detroit area, we do have a winning team worth watching. As noted in this thread, the Men's Lacrosse team has won 5 of its last 6 and will finish tied for first or in second place in the MAAC (depending on the outcome of Quinnipiac's final conference game on Saturday). They conclude the regular season tomorrow (Saturday, April 28) with a non-conference game against Cleveland State. Game is at Titan Field at 1:00 p.m. The match will also be on ESPN+.
Titans Matthew Vangalen, a junior attacker, and Logan Shamblin, a freshman goalie, were Players of the Week last week in the MAAC.

The Titans closed out the regular season with a 12-6 win over Cleveland State today. The win was a school record 4th in a row (this is the Titans' 10th year playing lacrosse). The Titans finish the regular season with an 8-6 mark, tying the school record for wins in a season. They begin play in the MAAC Conference tournament on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The second seeded TItans will face 3rd seeded Monmouth in the opening round. Unfortunately, Monmouth is hosting the tournament this year, so the Titans will have to overcome the Hawks home field advantage.

Titans face Canisius on Saturday at 10:00 in West Long Branch, NJ (Monmouth). Winner gets an NCAA tournament berth. Game is on ESPNU.

Big disappointment today. Titans led by 2 with under 3 minutes to go, but Canisius scored twice, getting the tying goal with 38 seconds left. The Titans won the faceoff to start the overtime but a big time mental error led to a pass straight to Canisius in front of the Titans unguarded net, and Canisius wins 10-9 just 6 seconds into overtime.

Brennan Kamish, a second team all-conference player and all-freshman player, is transferring from Detroit to Rutgers. It looks like lacrosse is already going the way of basketball, with the mid-majors merely serving as minor leagues for the top programs.
Depressing.

Quinnipiac, the defending MAAC regular season champion, has suspended its entire lacrosse team for some violation of "student conduct policy." Mass cheating? Some raucus, out-of-control party? www.wfsb.com/news/qu-men-s-lacrosse-team-suspended-pending-investigation/article_40334280-bf61-11e8-b874-0ff0acd95d27.htmlLynn Bushnell, vice president of public affairs ... , “The university has suspended the men’s lacrosse team pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged violations of the student conduct policy. This suspension, which takes effect immediately, prohibits all team activity, including practicing and representing the university in competitions. With the well-being of our students being our top priority, the university has zero tolerance for any behavior that endangers any member of the university community.” Doesn't sound like cheating.
