The Titans, being Titans (as frustrating as fandom can get) lost at home today to Canisius, 11-8. A win would have clinched a spot in the MAAC 4-team tournament, and kept the Titans in first place. Instead, the Titans drop to 3rd, a half game behind Canisius and Marist. Canisius, recall, scored two late goals to force overtime last year in the MAAC tournament final, then won (for an NCAA tournament berth) in OT. Today, Canisius scored the final 5 goals of the game for the come-from-behind win.
The Titans (4-2 in conference, 7-4 overall) play at Siena next Saturday to close out the conference season. A loss would make everything dicey for the Titans--they would trail Marist and Canisius, and be tied or behind Quinnipiac and Siena in the loss column, with both those teams holding the tie-breaker over the Titans.

The men won today at Siena, 13-10. Seth Mendell scored 4 goals, Brett Erskine 3, and Matthew Van Galen had a goal and 4 assists. The Titans finish conference play at 5-2, guaranteeing them at least a tie for second, and possibly a tie for first, in the conference. With the tie breaker formulas, they will be seeded either 2nd or 3rd in the 4-team MAAC tournament--they won't be the top seed even if they tie for first.
The conference tournament begins May 2. Before then, the Titans have two non-conference road games, at Cleveland State and at Utah. We're currently 8-4 overall.

The women's lacrosse team lost today at home to Coastal Carolina, 8-3. The non-conference loss snapped a 4 game Titan win streak. The ladies play in the Southern Conference, and are currently tied with Furman and Mercer for first place in the conference. All three teams wrap up conference play next Saturday, with the Titans at Central Michigan. A win next week will clinch the Titans a share of first place and either the 1st or 2nd seed in the 4 team SoCon tournament, which begins May 2. A loss will leave the Titans seeded 3rd or 4th, but still in the conference tournament. The Lady Titans are 7-8 overall.

The Titans lost today at Utah, 16-10. That's two non-conference losses this week to end the regular season.
Meanwhile, Marist clinched the MAAC regular season title by beating Canisius Friday night in Buffalo. The Titans finish tied for second with Quinnipiac, with Canisius 4th. Those 4 will play in the the MAAC tournament that begins on Thursday at Marist, in Poughkeepsie, NY. (Marist was the selected site before the season began--their winning the regular season is just coincidence). Technically Quinnipiac will be seeded 2d and Detroit 3rd, thanks to the Bobcats regular season win over the Titans, but it makes no difference in reality--either way they'll face each other on a neutral field, with the winner getting the winner of the rematch between Canisius and Marist. The semifinals will be Thursday night, with Detroit facing off at 4:00 p.m., and the finals at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, on ESPNU. If the Titans reach the finals, it will be their 5th game in 15 days--that's a lot for lacrosse, and you've got to wonder the wisdom of scheduling two non-conference matches the week before the conference tournament.
During the season Marist beat Canisius 10-8 in Buffalo. Quinnipiac beat Detroit 12-9 in Hamden, Connecticut back on March 16. If we reach the finals, we lost to Canisius earlier this month, 11-8, but beat Marist 12-11 (their only conference loss) in Poughkeepsie on March 30. Should be a good tournament.
Last year, the Titans blew a late lead and then lost to Canisius in overtime in the conference tournament final. The Titans are very capable of winning it this year, even on Marist's home turf. It would be nice to see the Titans establish themselves as a factor in college lacrosse with a couple NCAA bids while the sport is still relatively young. The Titans lost to Siena in the finals of the MAAC tournament in 2011, but won the MAAC tournament in 2013 for our first and so far only NCAA lacrosse tournament bid. There, the Titans led #2 ranked Notre Dame early in the 4th quarter, but the Irish rallied to avoid the upset. The Titans began playing lacrosse in 2009.
And a final note: Titan goalie Logan Shamblin was MAAC defensive player of the week, and attacker Seth Mendell offensive player of the week, for April 22. It was Shamblin's 3rd weekly recognition this year, and Mendell's second.

The Lady Titans beat Central Michigan yesterday, 10-9, to finish the Southern Conference regular season tied for first with Mercer and Furman, the second straight year they've tied for first. Based on the various tie breakers, the Ladies will be seeded 2nd in the So Con tournament that begins on Thursday. The Titans will bace Furman in the first round, and unfortunately the championships are being held this year at Furman. But the Ladies beat the Paladins 14-12 during the regular season, and hopefully can make it a sweep on Thursday. The title game is Saturday.

Quinnipiac outscored the Titans 8-0 in the first period and went on to beat Detroit 19-10 in the MAAC semifinals today. The Quinnipeckers ran the score to 9-0 before the Titans got on the board. Detroit cut the margin to 5 early in the 4th period, but Quinnipiac, which tied with Detroit for second place in the regular season, scored two quick goals to put the match out of reach.
On a more positive note, earlier in the week sophomore goalie Logan Shamblin was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and Senior Matthew Van Galen MAAC Offensive Player of the Year. Also named to the MAAC first team all-conference was sophomore midfielder Paul Manuszak. Named to the second team were freshman Cam Kostas and juniors Alex Jarzembowsi, Alex Akins, and Sam McClain. AJ Van Voorhis joined Kostas on the all-freshman team.
The Titans have been pretty good on the lacrosse field the last few years, but haven't been able to win the big games needed for NCAA bids and national recognition. Van Galen's loss will hurt but the Titans have a lot of talent returning next year.

Ladies lacrosse, which tied for first in the Southern Conference regular season with Furman and Mercer, lost to Furman tonight in the conference tournament semifinals. Like the men earlier in the day, the ladies fell way behind early and never really got into the game. The final was Furman 12, Titans 8.
Earlier this week, senior Lexie Kinmond and juniors Kaitlyn Wandelt and Tegan McManus were named first team all-conference. Midfielder Elise Harder was named to the All-Frosh team.
