I did not have any inside information but my gut was telling me Randle was Ypsilanti bound. Good call, maybe our staff doesn't believe he can play at the d1 level. Or maybe he wasn't interested in Detroit Mercy.

I did not have any inside information but my gut was telling me Randle was Ypsilanti bound. Good call, maybe our staff doesn't believe he can play at the d1 level. Could be. And they might be right. He didn't have a lot of known offers. But the staff has taken guys with that recruiting profile before. I hope they pursued him. The guard we took from Cass last year wasn't highly recruited, but I didn't mind a reach on a Detroit kid that might develop then. Same with Randle for me. So many things go into a decision like this, on both sides. Maybe the staff offered Randle but he wasn't really plan A for them. Eastern needs players, so I imagine Heath put a full court press on Randle. Or maybe Davis really wanted Randle but Randle didn't want us. Maybe he wanted to get out of the City for college but still be close. Maybe he didn't want to play for a school called Mercy. Maybe he's tight with the Detroit kid who transferred to EMU from Sienna recently. Lots of factors could be at play. I won't come down too hard on anyone. 🙂 I think if we still weren't dealing with so many unknowns in our class of 2021 (no one has been officially announced and we won't know waiver status for awhile) the Randle decision wouldn't stand out.

I couldn't find the results of the Mitten Classic in Southfield which was supposed to be played yesterday. I checked the Oakland Press but nothing mentioned.

I never did see the results/stats from the Mitten Classic. You have to pay to see the recorded broadcast of the game, and I don't want to know how did well bad enough to pay. :-) Would be nice to know how various players, including Randle, did in that game. For what it's worth, some EMU fans I talk to were pretty excited about the possibility of landing Randle before he made the decision, and were happy about his commitment. We'll see how he does. He will be playing for a good coach in Heath.

In the Green Bay thread, there was some conversation about how HL teams are recruiting this offseason and how the Titans stack up. It's hard to get a read on the Titans class so far. Harvey looks like the best of the bunch, but we're still waiting on any kind of comment confirming his commitment. He's been posting on social media, but has nothing up that indicates he is a Titan commit. I'm not saying he isn't, but it would be nice to get a sign.
Curran, Phillips, and McAdoo are question marks, simply because we don't know if/when they will receive waivers.
The Titan staff did good work with the transfers they got last season. Hopefully they get these guys on board and see similar production.

Dead period is over tomorrow! Visits can begin again. With the Titans seemingly focused heavily on transfers, I'm not sure what to expect in terms of visits, but we'll see what happens.

I’m not all that impressed with our latest recruit. Nothing against any of our new recruits, but they aren’t exactly the caliber players I was hoping to land for what is probably AD’s last season. I thought we’d be a good destination for transfers with a year to play, but instead of early pickups it feels like we are scraping the barrel in mid June.
The one exception would be DJ Harvey, but he hasn’t even taken the 2 minutes to update his Twitter handle and say he’s excited to join us. That’s really disappointing. Of course, it could be an admissions issue and he doesn’t want to say anything publicly until he’s enrolled officially.

So it looks like the Class of '21 is in done, barring some late surprise (last minute transfer out, someone reneging on stated commitment, admissions office denying admission, etc.).
Max Curran, 6-9 F Prince Oduro, 6-8 F Madut Akec, 6-7 F Jordan Phillips, 6-7 F D.J. Harvey, 6-6 G Jeramy Shaw, 6-6 G Kevin McAdoo, 6-2 G
You've got a couple inside players in Curran and Oduro, big wings and shooting guards, and a point guard.
It's a big class, with 7 players. There is a good chance that this be the norm going forward, with the one-time transfer rule and the current attitude towards transfers leading to quite a bit of shuffling throughout college hoops.
Correspondingly, the entire class consists of transfers; six from 4-year schools, one from the juco ranks. The Titans will, I predict, usually have some HS recruits, but all-transfer classes like this aren't going to be oddities. Ohio State's coach, Chris Holtmann, was quoted in USA Today a month or so ago saying he knew coaches who were intentionally doing all their recruiting through the transfer portal and planned to make that the norm. People who want to pine away for "four year players" are just going to have to get used to it.
But that said, note where the Titans are. Here's the Titans scholarship roster, with players classified based on years of eligibility left, including this coming season: Seniors: Curran, Johnson, Koka Juniors: Davis, Harvey, Isiani, McAdoo, Oduro Sophomores: Akec, Phillips, Shaw Freshmen: LeGreair, Liedel, Pink, Waterman (I know, it feels weird to say Davis is a Junior, having played 3 seasons, or Waterman a freshman, but that's their eligibility status entering this year).
To those who have been complaining that under Davis it looked like we'd always be having massive turnover and having to reload every year, I can just say that that's a pretty good distribution amongst classes (and that's still true if you remove from the equation Johnson and Davis, who, this scenario projects, won't count against our scholarship limit). To the extent someone wants to complain that Davis may not play 2 more years, or Waterman 4, they're just describing why we're going to see lots of shuffle, not just in Detroit but across college ball. But you can't complain that we're not recruiting "4-year players." They just won't all stay all four years. Back in the old days, when transfers were rare, and pro options limited to non-existent, you'd only expect us to have 2 scholarship openings after this season (Curran and Koka). We'll likely (and unfortunately?) end up with more than that to fill next spring, but that's today landscape, not a Titan issue.
I think it's a very good recruiting class that fills our needs. It's not quite as good as we may have hoped--Josh Langford decided to call it quits altogether rather than transfer; Rocket Watts, if we were ever in the running, went elsewhere, etc. But it's a very good class.
Congrats to the staff.
