UM picking up are table scraps (day old table scraps too). Never thought I would see this day come. 2019-2020 UM athletic program prepare for a crash in 5,4,3..... I personally liked Smith and thought he did a nice job when he would come to the Titan Club before games. The positioning and footwork of our Big's was a lot better under Jay's tutelage than under BA.

Jay is a good guy who is fighting cancer. UM also hired Phil Martelli. On paper, they have a pretty good staff.

He wasn't called the Earl the Twirl because he had bad footwork. His help and advice seemed to get pushed aside during the last regime. I think Jay was not fragile about his ability and welcomed ideas and outside input. I wonder if Davis has thought of using Earl if he is available to help. He could help Willy and our Big's or even our new guy when we find him.

I believe the current staff consults with Earl and other former players and coaches for certain things. Including Smokey Gaines.

I thought Jay Smith was a good hire for us. But looking back at were are program was and looking at were UM program was is two totally different scenario (during the hire of Jay). My real point was that I never thought UM would be hiring former coaches from us or any Horizon League program. Only try to state that UM program is on another level than UDM. If UM is hire are former coaches that might be a good sign that their program isn't as health as people are thinking.

How do you think assistant coaches progress through the ranks if they are not hired by a power school away from a mid-major? Beilein had hired Saadi Washington away from Oakland as an assistant and Howard kept him. For that matter, why would UM hire Howard who has absolutely no college coaching experience? Jay Smith is UM's Director of Player Personnel & Development. Smith was an assistant coach at UM from 1989-96. So, he coached Howard during the Fab Five years. He was the head coach at Grand Valley and then at Central Michigan after he left UM. He just went through a big battle with cancer. He is an experienced coach who can help Howard adjust to the coaching profession. Again, I'm not as much disagreeing with you as I am trying to understand your point.

I loved Minnerath as well. I’m glad he’s had such a great career overseas in some really good leagues.

Here's an article that I found today with a Cole Long update. (Note the branding fail)
Cole Long is making his case for conference player of the year. After three seasons in Detroit playing NCAA Division 1 for the University of Detroit-Mercy, Long has been absolutely dominant so far in USPORTS. This weekend was no exception as the hometown St. John’s kid averaged 28 points in two big wins against Acadia to help the Seahawks sit firmly in second place in the conference with a 4-2 record. Just behind the Seahawks is the Saint Mary’s Huskies who finally found their stride this weekend picking up a huge sweep against StFX after starting the season 1-3. The Huskies were led by Qyemah Gibson and will look to continue their momentum into next weekend against UNB. The Varsity Reds will be looking to rebound off a tough overtime loss at the hands of Cape Breton.

I like Cole, but it never worked for him in Detroit. Maybe not cold enough. He was supposed to be a distance shooter but never hit the 3s. And he wasn't physical enough for HL games. But he graduated in three years and helped with APR and GPA. Wish him well.
