Not so much of an update, but a note about a replay of a great individual Titan moment. Thurs at 7pm on ESPN2 AND Sun at 1pm on ESPN. Note, this is a highlight show covering the best from throughout the history of the event, including Doug Anderson, and NOT a straight replay of the year he competed

Jackson found a kindred spirit in Lavar Ball, patriarch of the Ball family.
I wonder what the purchase price was.

John Beauford just posted a photo and the following message on the “University of Detroit Mercy Historical Photos” Facebook page:
“In the 1990-91 season. I played about 12 games before I was removed from the team. After Coach Ricky Byrdsong threw a water cooler at my head. 🤗. This was after a game at Butler. I was immature! I deserved it. At 50 years old I understand that. Anyway. For about five years we played at Cobo Hall. This was in the sports section of the Free Press. I believe that it was the FP. I haven’t lived in Detroit for years. I can’t remember the names of the newspapers in Detroit. But, U of D vs Toledo. January 1991. Today, my 7 foot frame has taken a beating. I’ve been confined to a wheelchair for years. I need all my joints replaced. But, between the wheelchair and the virus. I can’t do much. Does anyone have any pictures from the 90-91 season? I would love to see it. Oh yeah. I came back to graduate. Class of 1995. Almost 25 years. 🙏🏽🙏🏽. Rest In Peace Coach Bird. In 2020, I understand you.”

I remember seeing him and Dan Lyton sitting on the bench in street clothes in 1990...and thinking to myself we are going to be really good next season. That didn't work out.

He was on campus during my time there. If I remember correctly, he was either freshman player of the year or the on the all freshman team in the MAC at Ohio and transferred to U of D. I knew of him during the summer of his sit out year - we actually lived in the the same dorm (one of the quads) on the same floor. We had a pretty negative "run in" during which he tried to attack me (all 7' 300# of him - he was huge and in the process of eating himself into mediocrity) and I pulled out a crowbar to fend him off/deter him. Anyways he ate his way off the team/messed up his way off the team, and that was that - a big man with potential was gone. Anyways, I'm sorry to read he's not doing well and wish him all the best 30 years later

Averaged 9.8 points and 6.3 rebounds. The Titans lost that Toledo game he referenced by a score of 78-76, but he had a monster game — 19 points (on 9-15 from the field, 1-1 from behind the arc), 15 rebounds, and 2 assists.

If something isn't quite factually correct, like his background or size or playing career, it's probably me just misremembering it after all those years

If I recall correctly, Titan fans came up with the nickname “Big Beauford” for John after the “Big Buford” hamburger Checker’s had begun to market at the time — “two large hand-seasoned, 100% beef hamburger patties, topped with two slices of melted American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise all on a toasted bakery-style bun.“
