Seattle is having a strong season in the aftermath of Coach Hayford's November resignation. The Pilots are 14-4, 5-0, and in first place in the WAC. They don't have any wins that you would call impressive, but no really bad losses either. The WAC race is tight, with the top five teams (Seattle, Sam Houston, New Mexico State, Grand Canyon, and Stephen F. Austin) separated by two games in the loss column. New Mexico State has the marquee wins, with victories over Davidson and Washington State. Utah Valley took out Washington. WAC surprise team: Chicago State. After going 0-9 last season before shutting down and putting up a 4-25, 0-14 record in 2019-20, the Cougars are 6-13, 2-4. And all of their wins are D1 teams: St. Thomas, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Tennessee State, IUPUI, California Baptist, and Lamar. They've been blown out a lot in their other games, but six wins is pretty good for Chicago State.

It got lost in the flurry of eye opening scores on February 26, but Chicago State's last win deserves a mention. The Cougars were 17 point home underdogs to 23-4 New Mexico State, but Chicago State pulled off the 61-59 upset. Great win for a struggling program. Unfortunately, announced attendance was only 207 for the game.
Chicago State is now 7-22, 3-13.

Assistant Coach Chris Victor took over after Hayford resigned. Victor led Seattle to a 23-8 record and was named WAC Coach of the Year today. On March 1, they removed the interim title and named him Coach.

Wow. Credit Greg Heiar for what must be the lowest D-1 head coaching debut ever. The Aggies will have their worst record in 19 years, their first losing season in 13 years, and end a string of 10 consecutive seasons (not counting shortened 2021 season) with 23 or more wins--not to mention having a player kill a person and then having the program suspended for stuff unrelated to the killing! This is a team that was 27-7 last year and won its first round NCAA game, and has played in 9 of the last 12 NCAA tournaments, and that has won either the regular season or conference tournament titles, or both, in 10 of the last 11 years. And of course, if we go way back, Lou Henson took 'em to a Final Four in 1970. Wow.

The 1970 squad was led by All American Jimmy Collins. He later coached UIC to NCAA tournament appearances from the MCC in 1990s.

Head coach Greg Heiar has been fired. As I noted above, this is probably the worst D-1 coaching debut ever. Poor Heiar will likely never get another chance.

Utah Valley had a good NIT run and lost to UAB in the Final Four. Sam Houston fell in the second round of the NIT. Southern Utah and Tarleton played in the CBI. Good season for the WAC on the court, except for the implosion of New Mexico State. The Aggies have been one of the most successful mid majors in recent years, but the program was shut down by the administration due to multiple off the court issues.
