We should start a scrapbook thread of comments like this in case Garibaldi ever has another brand evaluation.

Been saying for years that Detroit Mercy sounds like the name of a hospital. 😠 Also, it's nice of us to give the opposing fans an easy way to make fun of us.

The hospital name confusion is by far the most frequent assumption I get when Detroit Mercy (General) is brought up. There actually is a Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento.... (I wonder if they are rivals with Oakland Medical Center, which is only 80 miles away. BTW, I heard Mercy is far superior to Oakland)😁

We should start a scrapbook thread of comments like this in case Garibaldi ever has another brand evaluation. Here’s more feedback from their board on our brand: “Detroit Mercy? Almost as interesting as playing the team from Pedro's School of Cosmetology and Scientology.” Post game: “StevenH said... (original post) It’s got to be hard to focus and concentrate with 7000 people watching you play in a 23,000 seat arena” “Schedule better teams...not a freaking hospital”

I believe if Butler was a shitty program people would make fun of their name also.

I believe if Butler was a shitty program people would make fun of their name also. Maybe, maybe not. I don't remember much fun being made of their name when they were bad, but of course it's been a long time since they were bad. Even if they were, at least no one would think they were a hospital or the smaller, satellite campus of some larger institution.

Butler University -- the top institution in the country for training the home servant industry. Team nickname: the Gentlemen's Gentlemen. Traditional rival: Grand Valet State University.

So graduates of Butler often get jobs working for graduates of Detroit...

It doesn't much matter if people make fun of the name--the point here is having people know the name, having an identity. That's why Detroit-Mercy fails-not because it's easy to mock. Everyone thinks Detroit-Mercy an NAIA school, or maybe an all-girls college, or maybe some little local college in the metro Detroit area--which makes them think: "I wonder whatever happened to University of Detroit--they had some good teams not all that long ago. Hmm."

So, we could just take a simple step that would alleviate all the identity confusion, win back some upset alumni, probably increase donations/revenue, eliminate a barrier to recruiting/scheduling, etc. Instead, we'll just take the long road of hoping everything falls into place for us to have greater success than we've ever had in a college basketball environment that's tougher than it's ever been for mid majors, so that people will finally know who we are. Bold strategy.

Bold strategy. Kind of sounds like the same brilliant strategists who helped knock the program back 30 yrs. and drew up the plan to dominate the Horizon League before it collapsed. The problem is it looks like the league is folding before we can.

It's been 30 years. If the school were to change the name back, confusion would start all over again.
Winning is the answer to building an identity, attracting recruits, getting attention and donations. No one is telling UTEP that changing back to Texas Western will result in another championship. No one is telling UIC to change its name back to University of Illinois at Chicago Circle to get more recruits.
As Al Davis would say, "Just win, baby!!"
